C-sections

Tubal vs. vasectomy?

Does anyone have any feedback about this issue?  I know we are done after DD, who is due in January.  She is our second.  I also know for sure that we are having a RCS.  DH is totally willing to get a vasectomy, and is planning on it.  I wonder if getting a tubal is a good idea as well?  I am not especially well versed on the risks/benefits.  I'd love to hear some input from ladies who've considered the issue!

Re: Tubal vs. vasectomy?

  • Our hospital is Catholic and will not allow me to get a tubal, otherwise I would. It's a simple, 5 minute procedure added on to the c/s that results in permanent sterilization.

DH will be having a vasectomy so that we can prevent future pregnancies (due to health reasons I cannot take hormonal birth control) and he's perfectly fine with it. He's talked with a few people who have had it done, including our PCP and they've eased any fears he had.

Ultimately, I think that the c/s plus tubal is the easiest way to go.

  • I wouldn't see reason to get both done. If you're having a c-section and your OB is willing to do a tubal, I'd go that route. You're already having a procedure and it makes the most sense. My OB said there is no extra recovery from the tubal, which is good too.

  • I just wonder if there are any long term side effects from the tubal?

We just want to be extra sure we're done, ha.  I can't do hormonal birth control either, so our options have been kind of limited.

  • If you're having it done at the same time as the RCS, then I would just do it then. However, if you are talking about having it done later/separate from the RCS, I would definitely have Dh do the vasectomy - it's a much less invasive procedure with no real risks (for a woman it is an actual surgery and there are risks with that).

  • We had talked about this too. In the end we decided that DH will get a vasectomy when LO is around a year old and I will go back on the nuva ring until then. I've had several miscarriages and I now worry about something happening to LO after they are born. If something were to happen to LO after they are born but I couldn't have more kids I think it would make it harder for me to cope. The idea of trying again is the only thing that got me through my losses in one piece. I hate that my mind goes here now. If that wasn't something I was worried about I would just get a tubal.

  • I'll be getting a Tubal done with my c-section. DH was going to get a vasectomy but after I decided to have a RCS i told him not to do it, he was relieved cause he really can't take time off of work to get it done and recover.

All of this - except that I could take bcp but I hate how they make me feel so I won't anymore.  DH is actually having it done next week.

  • I too was in limbo on what to do. I had a RCS in May and planned on doing it then. If I hadn't the RCS then DH would have gone. Sort of nipped it in the bud. Some MDs/Hospitals won't do it at the same time if your not in the clear (safe), even high BP can stop them (which is a joke), but the heads up either way.  It's almost been six months I am fine. I wouldn't know it was even done. I feel great! Good Luck!
