Cloth Diapering

Starting cloth at 7 months?

I'm thinking of starting cloth part time...evenings (not overnight) at home and weekends, Pampers to daycare/Grandma. My son is 7 months, close to 20 pounds, with a small waist but slightly chunky thighs. He has a very long torso and is hard to get into onesies or rompers, so I can't add too much bulk to his bottom. He doesn't tend to soak and he is eating solids. I want to get 10 or 12 diapers but I don't think a trial is really worth the effort at this point. I also don't want to spend $22+ per diaper. Should I go with prefolds+Thirsties (rec'd highly by a friend), AI2s or AIOs? What kind, from where? I need help! :)

Re: Starting cloth at 7 months?

  • My triplets are 21 months and we recently switched to cloth diapering and I am so happy we did. I started with Blueberry pockets but have grown to really dislike them. I recently got the Kawaii Snazzy Minky's and absolutely love them! They are super cheap ($6-9/ diaper or you can get packages which saves a little more).

I have the same issues with fitting when it comes to my girls (they have chunky legs). Personally I think these are pretty trim and their regular clothes fit nicely over them. They are heavy wetters (especially my DS) and have had no leak issues at all, even overnight. I wrote a detailed review of them with lots of photos of both the Kawaii and Blueberries if you want to check them out.  https://www.thetripletlife.com/894-kawaii-diaper-review-comparison-to-blueberries

Good luck in whatever you go with!

  • If your wanting pocket CD?s check out Kawaii diapers at www.jackbenatural.com and www.theluvyourbaby.com.  I have a friend that swears by them and I?m getting ready to order some myself.  Also check out bumGenius seconds at www.cottonbabies.com/index.php?cPath=51

I had to do part time diapering with DD#2 and I opted for prefolds and covers but this time around I'm going with pockets b/c daycare will accept pocket diapers.

  • Our LO is about the same age with similar body type. CDs seem expensive at first, but the cost is all upfront they more than pay for themselves in time. Have you looked into buying used? It's a great way to try different types for less. I was too lazy for a trail, so I bought a little of this and a little of that until I found what I like best. For pockets, Happy Heiny and Econappi fit the best. For covers, Blueberry coveralls and sized thirstie covers (not the duos, not long enough in the rise and don't fit her chunky legs/small waist well). Flips fit her well to, and can be a cheaper option.

  • Just sayin', you can try CDs at daycare and Grandma too.

You can buy used and def get diapers for less than $22 each. I've rarely paid that much.

I'm not a huge prefold fan, but I'm a big fan of pockets. However, your child might do just fine with prefolds.

I'd start with the FAQs to get yourself familiar, and maybe check out the daily for sale stuff here and see what you can pick up.

  • Thanks. I spent all yesterday reading the FAQs and links from there. I think I'll try a BG 4.0, a FB and a prefold+Thirsties to see which we like best. He goes to daycare twice a week and they don't take them, and both Grandmas said NO WAY. Can I get by with 10-12 if only for evenings and weekends?
