ice cube trays

Awhile back I was lurking from the third trimester board and saw something about freezing breast milk in ice cube trays? Can someone please go over this again! Thanks so much from a FTM!

Also do you then store it in Ziploc baggies or breast milk storage bags?

Re: ice cube trays

  • I have these special trays that have a cover. I freeze the milk in there and then transfer 12-16 one ounce "sticks" to a quart sized freezer bag.  The great thing about these trays is that the sticks fit through the opening of a bottle so you can put them in the bottle frozen to thaw.  It also allows you to adjust how much you put in a bottle too (versus freezing a certain number of ounces in a bag).

    Same here.

  • Thanks ladies I appreciate the advice!

  • Question. May be stupid, but I'm also a FTM

Do you pump and then pour into the tray?

After you transfer the individual sticks into a ziploc freezer bag. Can you use just a few sticks from the bag and leave the rest in the bag?

Yes, I pump into the bottles that come with the pump, then pour into the ice cube trays. When I'm ready to make a bottle, I just take out the number of cubes that I want to thaw for the bottle.

I have silicone ice cube trays, bought them at a specialty kitchen store in the mall.  I freeze the cubes in Ziploc freezer bags. When it's time to make a bottle (I use Playtex drop ins) I put the cubes directly into the bottle liner to thaw.  I love doing it this way and I feel like I waste less breast milk this way becaue I can control the amount I want to thaw.
