C-sections

lifting restrictions after c/s

I had my rcs on Friday and have DH home with me for the rest of the week. He goes back to work on Monday, which will be 10 days after my section. When I was discharged I was told no lifting anything heavier than 10 lb for 2 weeks. My DD#1 is 22 lb and I can't think of any way around lifting her in and out of her crib at naptime. Thats the only time I would need to but it really makes me nervous. I feel great and don't think it would hurt me but I don't want to overdo it and the last thing I need is to pop a stitch or something. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone who could help. WDYT? Anyone else had to lift an older child before they were supposed to? I really don't want to cause any damage but I don't think it can be avoided.

Re: lifting restrictions after c/s

  • When I had my c-section,  my doctor told me the lifting restriction was only for 2 weeks.  But, that contradicts literally everything I've seen on this board (6 weeks).  I was doing heavy lifting about 2 weeks post op and felt fine, but I tend to really push things.

this... I'm waiting the full 6 weeks recommended because my DS weighs 35 lbs.

While this is certainly ideal, it's not possible for everyone.

I live pretty far from both sides of our family and don't have anyone that could come stay for 4-6 weeks.  We're trying to move much closer to home next year, and this is part of the reason why.  Moms need help!

OP - Can your DH help with nights and mornings?  And then for naps maybe you could set up a little tent or something on the floor for your older child.  You could turn it into a fun adventure.

  • I started lifting DS who is 30 lbs after 2 weeks, just because I felt fine. Otherwise, I would have waited.

  • i have been lifting DD since i was 2 weeks pp and she weighs 28 lbs.  i haven't had any problems.  just make sure you try to lift with your legs and think about how you are going to move before you do it.
