NBR: Wearing high heels....comfortably...is it possible?

So I bought some super cute heels, and have them on with jeans today. They look so cute, but goodness I cannot walk in them, and my feet are killing me already (and it's only 9:20am - gonna be a long day...)

Any tips or tricks for wearing heels? These are not cheapies, so I thought that they'd be comfortable. Guess I was wrong.

Any super secret inserts that work to make heels more comfortable? How do you stretch them out? Willing to try anything at this point. Thanks!

  • Go get some Dr. Scholls high heel insoles. They definitely help. No matter how nice my shoes - I always have to break them in.  The insoles help - as do band aids.

  • They might be too high. It's taken me a while to be able to get back to my old high heels after a baby because my feet changed so much. If you've never worn high heels much then going straight into them is a shocker to say the least. I have some 4 inch ones that are some of my most comfortable ones I own and I have some 3 inch ones that I can't even get out of the front door because they are so uncomfortable. Most stretch but it depends on your feet and what material they are made of. I'd try wearing them around the house first and then quick trips to the store and gradually wearing them longer and longer.

Also...keep a spare pair of flats or flip flops in your desk.Big Smile

  • I've had good success with Foot Petal inserts in my super-high heels.

  • Good ideas from everyone else.  I know you already have this pair of high heels, but what I found helpful in terms of transitioning back to heels is to start with wedges or a thicker heel.  I didn't wear heels while I was pregnant, and then I didn't wear them for the first 10 months or so of DD's life, except for special occasions (a wedding we went to).  So when I went to buy shoes, my stylist recommended that I start with wedges rather than heels.  So I now have 2 pairs of wedges (one black and one leopard print) that are both about 2 or 2 1/2 inches high.  That has really made all the difference for me.  Good luck!

  • I like foot petals over anything from the drug store/target. I think it just takes some getting used to though. I'd bring flip flops in my pursiftar when my feet hurt by the end of the day.

This! I find wedges so much more bearable, and heels are more bearable AFTER wedges. I think its due to the mid foot support. I agree that wedges "broke" me into heels more comfortably.

  • Ditto the inserts. They are a great help. I saw a really large selection at Bed Bath and Beyond, of all places. I like the gel ones that go under the ball of your foot.

I also choose my brands strategically. I love all of my shoes and boots by Clark's, Dansko, and Aerosoles (also mostly wedges). I have learned that I cannot wear heels by Nine West or the brand called Nina because of their arch support, but Steve Madden's heels work well for my arches for work. I no longer buy any heels over three inches because I know I just won't wear them. Most of my favorites are at about two inches.
