Parenting after a Loss

Egg Allergy it is!

Pedi called today, K has a severe egg allergy. We will retest her in a year, but for now it's no egg, no egg products, nothing made with eggs, nothing cooked in the same pan as an egg!
Looks like reading lables will be a new hobby for me.

It's not the worst thing I can imagine, but her birthday cake won't be as yummy!

Re: Egg Allergy it is!

  • Glad you know what it is at least. All allergies are a huge PITA, fingers crossed she outgrows it.

  • It is not the end of the world. I'm sorry this is the result though. Lable reading gets easier as you go.

  • Welcome to the food allergy club. Hope she outgrows it! No flu shot for her either.

  • DS also has severe egg allergy; we found out about 4 months ago. FWIW, it hasn't been as hard to eliminate egg from his diet as I might have thought. And, as an aside, he did receive a flu shot - and tolerated it just fine. Per his allergist, the egg antigen component in influenza vaccine is so minuscule as to represent little or no risk to kids with egg allergies.

  • We have an egg allergy as well.  It's a pain in the neck, but never fear, it is possible to make very yummy cakes without egg.  You can use a regular recipe, and buy powdered egg replacer (Ener-G brand, found in health food stores).  Or, try this one.  I've been making it for all our birthdays and I am asked for the recipe every single time.  I use sour cream instead of apple sauce, which makes it a little more fall-apart-y, but if you let it cool completely before messing with it, that helps.  It's my go-to chocolate cake recipe.

  • I'm glad you got an answer. Sorry you have to deal with an allergy though.

  • I hope she outgrows it. DD had a soy and dairy allergy that she outgrew but it wasn't severe.

  • Thanks for the recipes!!!
I am glad to hear people say it's not as bad as they thought, and that their LO's outgrew it. I hope K does too!
I know families have much bigger issues to deal with than birthday cake and breakfast, so I am trying to count my blessings and am thankful we found out now!
