Natural Birth

How do they not know??

I was talking to a girl I know that is due about a week and a half after me. She had no idea what a doula is (not too surprising) but then another girl I know chimed in and I mentioned I was seeing a midwife and they didn't know what a midwife is either. And the one that chimed in has 2 kids!! I just don't understand. SMH....

Re: How do they not know??

  • People are trained in this time to a certain view of childbirth and they're very ignorant.

What amazes me is how much people THINK they know. Women generally THINK they are VERY educated about childbirth...but they ONLY know things they've seen in movies. I hate that people don't even think to do their own research =/

This is how I feel about it.  When women get pregnant they will research a million car seats and cribs and other baby paraphernalia,  but they never research about how to give birth.  It annoys the crap out of me.  I don't care if you decide to use drugs in your birth, as long as you've done the research and feel that it is the best option for you.

The question I get the most is what is the difference between a doula and a midwife.  Most people have heard of them, but they don't know their functions in a birth.

  • Well I can kinda understand them not knowing what a doula was. I never heard of one until I got pregnant. But at our hospital, you only see a midwife unless you have a high risk pregnancy, which I love!!! And there is always a midwife on duty in labor and delivery.

  • Just 3 years ago, when I was in grad school, I met a girl who said she was getting her degree in midwifery and I had no idea what she was talking about. When she explained it, I thought she was a hippy. Fast forward to today, and I'm with a MW practice, hired a doula, and I am going for a birth center birth. When people don't know or think they know but don't, I just try to remember that rather recently, I also knew nothing & my initial reaction wasn't that positive either.

  • The most amazing thing I've gotten from a mother of three when I had to switch from a midwife to a traditional OB (I got GD and am high risk now) was "I'm so happy you're seeing a REAL doctor who knows about labor." Uh huh...

Yeah, because a midwife who has delivered 100+ bbies naturally knows sooo much less about labor that the OB who has a 50% CS rate. lol
