Abbott Northwestern?

Has anyone been to Abbott Northwestern?  I just found out the Midwife group I want to switch to will only be delivering there after the new year, but I've heard it's in an awful neighborhood and safety could be an issue??  I'd appreciate it if anyone can either confirm or deny these claims and offer any suggestions!!  Thanks, Ladies!

The neighborhood is not fantastic. But if you park in the ramp and not leave things visible in the car, I think things are fine.  I don't think that you have to be concerned about safety inside the hospital. From what I have heard, the care is great.  The other feature is that it is connected to Children's Hospital, so if there would be any complications with the baby, Childrens has a fantastic NICU.

Ditto pp. I think the neighborhood is fine. I wouldn't take a stroll around there after dark but park in the ramp and I wouldn't think you'd have any problems.

I've been there many times for family in the heart area. I've always felt okay in the parking ramps. I do believe you can request a security guard escort.

I agree with previous comments on safety.  We had no issues during our multiple visits for classes and while there for the birth of our DD.

I was extremely happy with the care and nurses.  The connection with Children's is why we chose them and why we will be there again with our second.

I believe you can take a tour of the hospital and rooms.  If you are concerned I would suggest you do so.

We live close to it, and delivered both of our babies there. The ramp is right there, and connected to the hospital. If your DH or anyone is leaving late or at night, you can always ask for security escort but it's fine.

There is also a skyway that you can walk pretty much all the way to the Midtown Global Market which is a fabulous place and where my husband went every day when he needed a break for lunch. And to bring me soup and a chocolate shake from Andy's Garage:) We had 2 c sections so we were there for quite a few days total.

The hospital itself we received excellent care, great staff, I had no complaints. Except the first postpartum room we were in was super small. But I think they've also redone some things, and you can definitely get a tour. We went to a couple of the classes through the hospital as well while we were pregnant and they were great.

    Ditto everyone else

I live and work within blocks of it, and during the day I feel completely safe. I walk/bike to work often and while I stay aware (like you should where ever you are), I do I feel safe. I'm always seeing security patrolling around the hospital. You'll pretty much have to park in the ramp, because all of the parking on the street is for less than 2 hours.

I was very happy with the care at Abbot, I liked it better than Methodist. My MW for delivery was AWESOME. I'm excited to go back to a familiar blace for baby #3.

The skyway to Global market is a long walk, but the food is so good. I've already told DH I'm expecting some Salty Tart cake as a reward after delivery. mmmmmmmm.

I just received this letter yesterday too so even though I'm not planning another baby yet I'm glad to see the responses about Abbott. It's reassuring to me that Abbott is connected to Children's since DS was premature in case future children are too it's good to know there is a great NICU there.

Oh and if you are indeed thinking of switching to NMM, I would HIGHLY recommend them:)

My husband is a doctor with the University of Minnesota and we decided to go with Abbott because of recommendations from other Doctors that he works with and because it's connected to Children's.  We were told if you're looking for a fancy room this isn't the place, but you'll receive great service.  I've been there a couple of times to the Women's Assessment Center and was really happy with my service.

In two weeks I should be able to tell you first hand what my birthing experience was like there!   Big Smile

I had my twins there (they had to go to Children's for the first few days) and I never worried. We were there often in the middle of the night to see our girls in the NICU. Park in the ramp and you'll be fine.

If you end up with an extended stay for any reason, you can purchase 2 week parking passes that give you unlimited parking for those 2 weeks. Saved us a ton of money because our girls were there for 6 weeks.

Thank you for the responses everyone!  I feel much better now about going out there and my husband and I have scheduled a tour to check it out!
