Help me pick Pediatrician....

We are moving to cedar park next week - eeeek!

Among the first things to take care of on my list is doctor so here is who I'm considering anyone have experiences to share?

Dr's. Cardwell @ Cedar park pediatric & family medicine - I'm used to a practice w/ several doctors and like that they have saturday hours.  This practice doesn't get good reviews on other sites - like yelp. complaints are that they rush through appointments, treat patients like a number and nickle and dime for every little thing.

Dr. Rice at ARC Discovery - gets good reviews but for some reason the whole "regional clinic" thing is weird to me.   I don't know why.  I feel like its a large walk-in medical clinic where we won't get personal attention...thoughts?

Dr. Cohen - Not sure I'm a fan of a single doctor practice.  I like being able to get more than one opinion easily and I know it'll always be one of "my" doctors if I have an after hours issue.  Could be a not a big deal, but I'm just used to a bigger practice.

Any personal experiences w any of these?

Re: Help me pick Pediatrician....

  • I don't have personal experience with any, but I wouldn't be deterred by the "regional" in the ARC name--they are all over town and I view them the same as any multi-physician practice. It's not like an urgent care facility where you're going to see a different dr at each appt or something. They have a good reputation.

ETA: I have several friends who go to Lone Star Pediatrics and LOVE them.

I'm SW so don't know ARC Discovery specifically, but we go to ARC SW and I love it.  I also had the same concern... like going to a "Doc in a box," but it doesn't feel that way at all to me.  The great thing about going to a multi-doc facility like that is the fact that you can always get an appointment, even very last minute.  And while it's ideal to be able to see your LO's doctor each time, if they are sick, I personally don't care who he sees as long as A doc can see him ASAP.  kwim?

At our location my LO has his "main" doc, but there is also another younger doc who has seen him several times when our doc is booked.  I get very personal feedback from both of them.

    Sorry to ramble.

  • We use Dr. Sperling and Dr. Lam at North Austin Pediatrics.  They have multiple doctors there but our main one is Dr. Sperling.  When she is not available, Dr. Lam is her back up per se

We are very happy with the office and never feel rushed.  They are located in the Cedar Park Hospital.......the medical building that is attached.  HTH

  • "Regional" in Austin Regional Clinic just means that they are a multi-geographic practice with places in Austin, Hutto, Round Rock, Kyle, etc.  It has nothing to do with being an urgent care place or whatever or a "doc in a box" (whatever the hell that is.)

I'm a life long ARC patient. We've been super happy with the practice.  All of our doctors are with ARC (OB/GYN, pediatricians, internist, and DH's GP.)

I don't have any experience with the north locations (I'm in far south Austin), but I feel like they're a good practice overall.   Also, because they are so big and they offer after hours care in three locations plus nurse advice phone lines (all without an extra fee charge like some practices in Austin do), I really think they're the best value as well.  They also take a TON of insurances and for those that don't have insurance, they will work out payment plans and negotiate rates for cash payments.

  • We go to Dr. Cardwell and have for 6 years. I really like him and his wife is also a doc there she is great also. There is a doc they have Dr Danner I think, that I have not liked but overall everyone else is great! We have seen Dr. Cohen before we started with him at another practice then he opened his own in CP we switched over but I was not very comfortable there we went once or twice before we switched to Dr. Cardwell. It may be better now but I'm not sure. My husband and I go to ARC I love it! I love the flexibility of the hours and locations but have never seen any Ped doc's there. Good luck on your move!
  • We see Dr. Sperling at North Austin Pediatrics. LOVE her. Could not say enough good things about her. We have a high deductible insurance plan & she always takes that into account & helps us save money with prescriptions, shots, etc. She is all about helping & loving her patients. The ONLY con is that her booking window for WELL CHECKS is about 3 months out, so you must book those way in advance, but sick visits are immediate & they have Saturday hours at their Austin location.
