switch from nutramigen to regular formula

I am gradually switching my son back to regular formula after being on nutramigen. The doctor said to look for blood in stool, if press on tummy and fussy and really dark green poop.  He hasn't had any of this yet, but he's been spitting up a lot more than he was.  Do you think this is b/c of the formula and a milk protein allergy or just a new formula that is causing spit up.  They didn't say anything about spitting up, but I have def. noticed that he spits up more.  I am going to call tomorrow, but just wanted to find out what you all have encountered after switching.  I am wondering if I should switch to the formula for spitting up, I think it's AR or something.  thx for your input.

Re: switch from nutramigen to regular formula

  • My LO has acid reflux and takes Prevacid. At about 4 months, he was spitting up more than ever, so I told the pedi and he recommended I get Colic formula. Did that and no changes. He then recommended I add 1 tsp of rice cereal to each oz. of His bottle. Did that... Amazing results as far as spitting up! He may get constipated every blue moon, because of rice, but if I add a few drops of karo syrup, he's good by the next day or two. Of course, I'm not recommending you do this without consulting your pedi, but it DEFINITELY worked for my LO and it's a life saver! GL :)

Ops, I meant to add that when I switched formulas, there was no problem!

  • my LO has MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerance) diagnosed at4 weeks. I EBF'd until 4 months. started supplementing at 4 months with similac alimentum. stopped BFing at 5 months. Pedi said I could try introducing milk proteins at 9 months but GI doc said to wait until 1 year. (I might try giving a tiny bit of yogurt at 9 months and see what happens?) At 1 year if baby for example was drinking a 6 oz bottle - to do 5 oz alimentum and 1 oz milk, and then slowly increase ratio. Your LO may just not be ready/has not grown out the intolerance yet??

  • We within the last 3 days started going from nutramigen to gentle ease, and so far the only issue we've had is she wasn't so impressed with the taste.  She did vomit last night and has spit up more, but nothing that the doctor is concerened about.  If she cried a lot or threw up a bunch and had bad bowel movements then he said would switch her back.  But so far it's been fine.

  • Our pedi also told us we could switch from Nutramigen to Gentlease at 6 months but warned us that it could take up to 2 weeks to determine if this formula was going to work/or give him stomach issues and spitting up.  We had such a hard time in the beginning after I stopped BFeeding that we decided not to chance it and just remain on Nutramigen for the duration.  He will be 8 months next week so hopefully we are going to be done with formula in the next couple of months.

  • I would wait until at least 6 months since that's when they typically start to outgrow milk protein sensitivity.  LO is 7 months and I'm slowly transitioning him to Gentlease.
