Postpartum Depression

What to expect...

I'm new to PPD.

I can introduce myself a little bit; I'm Ami, I am a first time mom, just had my little guy a week and a half ago.

I went to my OB today after some insisting from my husband. I've had issues with depression/anxiety before and we had a deal that if I started acting "off" he would let me know. Within three days of giving birth to my little guy, he told me I was acting "off'.My OB was very encouraging and took me very seriously.  He spent time with my husband and I, telling me it's not my fault, that it's good we're getting help now rather than waiting, etc. He gave us the number of a friend of his who is a psychiatrist, but when we got home, we realized he wasn't covered. So we found someone in our plan and are seeing the psychiatrist tomorrow. My OB told my husband that until I'm seen, I'm not allowed to be left home alone and to make sure someone is with me at all times.

So, I guess here is where the question comes in. I've never been to a psychiatrist before & I'm not sure what to expect. My husband has off tomorrow and right now, I am feeling very lousy and vulnerable..   Do you think they'll let him come in with me for the consultation? Will I get a prescription for something right away?

Feedback is welcome as well as advice of how to just get through all this. My head's still kind of spinning.

Re: What to expect...

  • I never sawa psychiatrist. My doc just gave me a perscription but I am sure the psychiatrist will let your hubby come in if you want him there. You will get a perscription right away. If you don't then go see someone else.

I am so sorry you are feeling this way. It does get so much better!

  • I'm like vickycat, I haven't been to a psych myself.

I hope you check back in with us this afternoon to let us know how your appointment went!

  • Glad your DH was proactive and got the ball rolling on getting help.

at my first appt with a psychiatrist, we spent about an hour together talking about my experience and how i was feeling then she diagnosed me and we set a meds plan. I was already on meds though my OB.

If you don't mesh with the first psych, try another. I would recommend trying to find someone who knows about PPD. You can use postpartumprogress.org or Postpartum support international for some support/contacts.
