Syrup smelling pee?

I am sure this has been asked before, but DS (8mo) has recently been sick (pneumonia) and the last few days his pee has smelled like syrup.  I'm guessing if he had something like Maple Syrup Urine Disease this would have happened earlier and been diagnosed prior to 8 months....curious if anyone has had this experience in the past and been able to trace it back to food/meds/etc.?

it's usually from the diapers--it always happened with DS1 when he wore huggies---especially the overnight ones.

I'd call your pedi just to be sure.  I think sweet smelling urine can be a sign of diabetes. . .  Also, from my understanding, the maple syrup urine disease can develop later although it is not as likely to do so. I'm sure your LO is fine, but it never hurts to check with your pedi just in case.

Are you taking Fenugreek and breastfeeding by chance?  That can also cause it.

Is the maple syrup urine disease only in breastfeeding babies?  I often smell my child's pee when his diaper leeks and gets on his clothes and think it smells like maple syrup.  Now I am freaking out. He's 8 months old and on nutramigen formula.  I didn't know if this was just a breastfeeding thing or if I should be worried.  He has been spitting up a lot more lately, which has a foul smell.

If it was MSUD you would definitely have known a long time ago. It's part of the newborn screening.

This was going to be my suggestion too. When I was taking Fenugreek for milk production, my body excreted a syrup-y scent and was also passed down through breast milk (it was safe).

I just asked the doctor about this today.  She is having my son do a urine test using 1st morning urine.  That's usually the only time I notice the smell.
