What kind of dog do you have?

I am sure I sound crazy on here, but we got a rottweiler puppy in May who we just absolutely love. She is still puppy, 7 months old now. She gets along really well with our son and they seem to be the best of friends. We still watch her around our son and her temperment has been great. Lil man can climb over her and try to pet her and she's very patient with him. They are pretty much growing up together and I really enjoy watching them play together. Lil man is learning how to pet and say her name and gets so excited when he comes home and sees her. The only issue I see if she likes his binkies. Lol. I was just wondering if anyone else has a big dog or what kind of dog they have? And how are/is your dog(s) with your kids?

I hope in January when baby girl comes she is just as good and is patient with all the ruckus we will have going on at our house with all the adjustments. I know people are pretty opionated on rottweilers and that's fine. We have had nothing but good experiences so far with her and she has been an awesome dog so far.

  • We have two boxers.  They are typically really good with DD but I always supervise their interaction.  I am more worried about how they will continue to be with DD than with the new baby.  I'm sure they will be fine but I'll never trust them 100%.

We have a 135 lb great dane.  She is as sweet as can be, but we do watch their interaction all the time.  The dane doesn't know her size.  Other than her size, she lets little girl pet her, tug on her tail and ears.

Obviously, we are practicing being "gentle" and nice.

We do have a constant battle with toys and binkies.  We've probably lost a  half a dozen to the dog, but hey, you can buy more.

  • We have a rotty, Roxy, and she'll be 4 years old on the 20th. We got her and then 5 days later found out we were expecting DD.

Roxy has always been great with the kids, the only problem we have is her licking them A LOT and the kids feeding her while they eat. She lets my son sit on her and bounce, lay on her, pull her ears, and she just lays there and takes it.

When both kids were born Roxy really could have cared less. She doesn't get jealous of our interaction with them vs. her. She actually gets more jealous when I try to hug or lay with DH, then she tries to butt it.

I know rotties have a reputation for being tough, but I think it's all about how they're raised.

  • We have two black labs - one is 110# and the other is 100#.  The younger one we thought was afraid of babies/kids.  He's turned out to be the most patient one.  We tell him constantly "you're getting a free pass to doggie heaven".  DS LOVES to climb on, jump on, pull his tail, shove his hands in his mouth and whatever other torture he can dream of.  The other, is less tolerant, but he usually gets up and leaves.  DS named them "grrr" and "woof-woof" after the sounds they made whenever he was around.  "grrr" was obviously the one who was less patient.
  • Totally agree with the previous posted who said it's the way a dog is raised not what breed it is. We have a 85lb weimaraner and a 20lb sheltie. People ask all the time how we keep up with having a weim and 2 kids. And I tell people we had her in training classes for 2 years to help her with her activity level and to learn how to respect us. Ever since DS1 was born she's become the laziest dog EVER! I have never had a worry about her the boys. The little dog on the other hand could do without the boys and I'm hoping she doesn't have a heart attack when #3 comes

  • Thanks for the awesome responses! We are all obviously in the big dog club lol. If I could figure out how to upload pics on here I would put a few pics of Maggie and Nic playing together.  We had to put down our old dog in August due to old age and hip problems. It's been bittersweet because of how much Maggie and Nic have bonded. I'm glad there are families out there that have big dogs and let them play with their kids and enjoy it. Of course there will always be a close eye to watch them play but hey if they're having fun let them play. I love how my son lights up everytime we get home and he sees her. He is trying so hard to say Hi Maggie, but we're working on it. I am def  getting a taste of what its like to have 2 kids right now before baby girl comes. Having them together all the time is like having 2 kids. Lol.

  • We have two labradors.  Overall they are great with her, but they sometimes get excited and their tails whack her or they knock her over.  They are very tolerant of her sitting on them, petting them, etc.

  • We have a German Shepherd, and she's about 75#.  She is the best dog ever.  She doesn't even get into the dirty diaper pail.  She is so patient with the kids, and DD especially loves her.  We had our dog for 3 years before DS was born, and she has accepted the kids as part of the family from day 1.

  • We also have a rottie and my son is 4 months old. She totally loves him and would lick him all day if we let her. Other than that... no problems!

  • I've got two pit bull mixes- a pit/lab mix and possibly a full pit but bc we rescued not sure).  Used to have three but one passed away the day we were bringing DS home from the hospital.

They are only ~60 lbs, but I feel you on the "aggressive" breed stigma. I watch ours like hawks around the kids (because you should with any breed because you never know) and we have a peaceful albeit loud household. :) I trust our dogs just fine. They get the human/other animal distinction with a baby.

  • I have an 80lb German Shepherd/Blood Hound mix and a 30lb Terrier/Beagle Mix.  The 80lb dog is much better with J than the 30lb dog.  I teach both the dogs and Jackson to respect one another's space (ie dogs can't get in Jackson's toy box, Jackson can't get in their bed or toys).  I supervise them together.  My little dog barks and runs away 90% of the time, BUT he's very protective and won't let anyone else near him.

My big dog on the other hand hangs out with J and lets him crawl on him, pull on him, play with his ears, mouth, tail etc.  I think the 3 of them are a great set.  The dogs were both 3 when Jackson was born so I think they'll do fine with a new baby.

I need a "like" button to press here. LOL. Hope you don't go through the binky wars like we do! Our rot loves our son's binkies. It's a constant game of taking the binky away from each other. They're playful when they do it, and my son can yank out the binky from her mouth and she's fine with it. If only I could teach my son to quit feeding her his food off the high chair and him to quit trying to eat her dog food.. Lol

  • We have a puggle, so not a big dog. She's about 23 lbs. She's wonderful with kids. It's her best quality. Patient, protective of them, playful but knows to take it easy on them. My biggest pet peeve about her and the kids is that she likes to eat baby socks, and my oldest used to be famous for taking socks off and hiding them around the house. I could never find a matching pair! Luckily my dog isn't as fond of toddler-size socks.
