Potentially Dumb Question: Explain Am.azon.Mom and Amaz.on.Prime?

I'm researching the best deals on diapers, and I thought I remembered some people on here have them automatically delivered from Ama.zon?  What is that about?

I know I can look into it on their site, and I plan to, but thought I'd ask in the meantime for someone to spell it out simply.  I can feel my brain petering out and start to shut down because I'm too tired to think clearly.  Thanks!

Re: Potentially Dumb Question: Explain Am.azon.Mom and Amaz.on.Prime?

  • oooh oooh I have a question too!

I can tell you a little, but others know more. If you subscribe for delivery of diapers from Amazon you get a really good deal. You have to agree to delivery every month or every 2 months. This is a problem for me because really I need them every 6 weeks. Does anyone else have this issue? I have to remember to cancel the subscription and resubscribe over and over again. It is annoying but I do it anyway since I am always ordering other stuff from Amazon.

Now the difference between Mom and Prime I'm not quite sure. I think with Mom you get free 2 day shipping on baby items? But with Prime it is all items and costs $70 or something a year? With Mom it is free based on you buying enough baby items or diapers??

  • Amaz on Mom gives you most of the benefits of Prime Membership, which is usually $79 per year.  You get 3 months for free when you sign up for it, and then for every $25 you spend on baby items they'll extend it for another month up to a year total time.  Prime gives you free 2 day shipping on any Prime-eligible products, or $3.99 next day air.  It's totally awesome and addictive.

They also offer a "Subscribe and Save" program that gives you a discount on baby items that are frequently purchased like diapers, wipes and wash.  They just changed how the discounts work so I'm not sure how much it is now, but it used to be about 30% off.  You have to agree to have regular shipments made, but I'd just wait until my box of diapers had shipped out and then cancel the subscription.

    .
  • Regular Prime membership has the exact same shipping options on the same items.  You also get access to a bunch of streaming movies and TV shows, and if you have a Kindle they just started free e-book borrowing.

Ok, yeah I just learned that!  Prime is $79/yr and free shipping on any purchase.  Mom gives you 3 months free shipping IF you sign up for Subscribe and Save (where each month or 2 they send you diapers/whatever items you've subscribed to).  After that 3 months, you get an extra month free each time you order $25 or more of baby stuff, up to one year.  I guess after one year if you remain a member of Mom and Subscribe/Save, then you also have to pay for the Prime, or pay for your shipping...

So, now my question is:  is it really worth it?  do you end up needing diapers more/less often then they are delivered (like KittyFX said)?  From what I've seen, the prices are comparable to Sams Club (for Pampers, anyway), but with free shipping, and no gas/travel expense for us.  I'm totally overthing this - diaper shopping should not be this mentally taxing...

I LOVE IT.  At first you have to play around a little with how many diapers you need vs how many are getting shipped to you (like when they are growing out of diaper sizes every week it seems in the beginning), but it's totally worth it.  My free year of shipping just ran out (sniff sniff) and I re-upped it for the $79 the next day.  I buy wipes, diapers, diaper genie refills, etc. on Sub and Save.  I'm about to start buying our coffee that way too!

    Amazon addict here.

i use this for diaper delivery the most- its great. you can initially request every 1, 2, 3 months etc. if you dont need the diapers yet when they send the email that the item is going to ship just go to the link and tell them to cancel the order (do it as soon as you get the email cause the shipment usually follows pretty quickly) then when you find yourself needing more diapers just go to your account and add a shipment- i don't think you have to cancel the subscription & resubscribe (or maybe you just meant cancel the order and then  re-order?). they always send an email so you know its coming and can cancel it if you dont need more diapers yet.

ETA: and if you need more diapers before your next shipment just go to your account and add a shipment :) they arrive really fast.

i really like it cause its a good price, super fast shipping (and now i have free 2 day shipping for everything on amazon) and its so nice having it delivered to your door and not having to go get it. also, if you do get an extra shipment by accident you can go online and easily return the item too and for free i think.

  • I just remembered something!  They totally changed it so that you don't get the Subscribe and Save discount AND the 2 day prime shipping on diapers anymore.  Shipping is still free but it's the normal ground shipping now.

I keep forgetting, wait until the last minute to order diapers and then run out when they take longer than 2 days to show up. Ugh.

    *off to order diapers*

  • So I emailed DH about this, and told him you all love it and said it's totally "awesome and addictive".  DH knows that if the Bumpies says it's awesome, then we can be damn sure it's awesome.  Wink  He mentioned that often Amazon doesn't charge sales tax - is this true?  It's a done deal either way, and I'm going to subscribe, just curious about the sales tax.

Also, is it pretty easy to go in and update sizes (wrt diapers) as the baby is outgrowing them?

Yup, you don't get charged tax on online purchases unless they have a physical location in the state and Amazon doesn't.

Yeah, it's totally easy to update sizes or just cancel a subscription and start a new one.

Mom gives you free 2-day shipping on anything that's Prime eligible whether or not you sign up for subscribe and save.  I had it for the full year and since we CD, I never used subscribe and save.

  • If you don't need the next shipment yet, you don't have to cancel and resubscribe. In the reminder email they always send before a shipment, they give you the option of changing to a later date. It's great!

Oh ok, got it.  But the 20% discount (for like diapers/wipes) is only for Sub&Save, right?  I guess that's where I got confused.

So if I want to buy something that I don't need regular delivery of (like cornstarch powder, or diaper ointment, or even toys/clothes, etc), there's no discount unless they just happen to be offering a deal on that particular item, but the 2-day shipping is still free, correct?

Yes.  20% is only for S&S.  But you will get free shipping on these items.

Non S&S items (toys, clothes, books, whatever) will be free shipping so long as they are Prime eligible.  Otherwise you will pay shipping.  But no additional discounts.
