How to get the puppy to stop jumping on belly?

My 8 month old male puppy keeps walking all over my belly when I'm laying down and when sitting. I thought dogs are suppose to sense when an owner is pregnant, but he cannot figure it out. Any ideas as to how not to have him walk all over baby? It is quite painful at times.

I swear my boy is going to come out with paw imprints in his little skull.

Edit: For those that commented about not letting puppy on the couch and correcting his behavior, we are doing that. However, he is still only 8 months old and very hyper so it takes time to teach these manners.

I never lay on the floor, and when he cuddles with me he likes to lay on my belly. It is just when he gets hyper and when people come over that he runs around.

Thanks for the idea about putting a pillow in my belly. I will have to do that in the meantime :)

  • Correct the dog each and every time it happens.  I think dogs should be taught not to jump/walk on ppl pregnant or not.

  • I had a little scare on Friday from this.  My 45lb dog jumped on my stomach.  Luckly, I know an ultra sound tech and he checked everything out for me and it was fine but he suggested placing a pillow on my tummy when I sit on the couch so at least that gives a little more cushion.  My dog doesn't usually do this but he was excited because my DH was home and he likes to get between us.  Another alternative it to not let the dog on the couch or bed.

  • Don't let your dog up on your lap or on the furniture while you are sitting down.

  • Dogs can sense change since they are observant but its highly doubtful they can look at you and know you are going to have a baby or that there is another life in there. (and if its a spaz puppy he probably doesnt know enough to understand subtle changes, he can get what crying means or maybe your mannerism when you are mad.(at least thats my take on there ability) I taught my dogs down, and easy when they are being hyper I say easy and they calm down, down is easier to teach every time he jumps on you just say down and motion for him to get off, I pat floor which means lay and they get it.  Easy we implemented while playing they get crazy then I get calm and say easy softly, I also say it when giving treats so they dont nip.  It seems to work out for me, with a hyper puppy it can take some time.

  • Are you laying on the floor?  If so, stop.  If you're not, keep the dog off your bed and couch.  Put him down and tell him "no" everytime he jumps up there.  Swat the nose or butt if you have to.
  • My lap has always been Lily's favorite spot to sleep. Now she is OBSESSED with it. I call it "squish the baby". Grated she is sleeping and not jumping, so I am fine with it :)

Anything causing pain needs to be corrected. Push him down, tell him "no" and do NOT give in. If he is not getting it, find somewhere to put him in "time out"?

  • I keep a pillow on my belly when I'm sitting or lying on the couch. When we're in the bed I'm almost always on my side, so it's not a problem there.
  • I have this problem too.  With our older dog, we started stepping on his paws when he jumps up, and that's corrected it.  The puppy is too quick and we can't do it with him.  I've had to start walking around them with my hands in front of me, and laying with my knees up to kind of form a barrier.

  • I have a large rottweiler that thinks she is a lap dog. She is quick to sit on my stomach all the time too. I found that when she goes to plop onto my stomach on push her either next to me so she is still close or onto my legs. Also, try giving her treat like half a biscuit or something the puppy really loves to have everytime she will cuddle next to you. It should give the puppy the idea that it is the correct area sit to next to you and not on you.

    Good luck!

  • If you puppy is running around rowdy, put your knee up to prevent it from being able to jump on you (if that is what it decides to do without warning).  My dog did this to me once, and it will not happen again, my spouse was pissed!

  • (I was a dog trainer for a little bit) IMO the best way to easily correct a dog doing this is when the dog goes to jump onto you, simply turn around and fold your arms. This is ignoring the dog, and not what they wanted in the first place, and shows the dog you are not interested. If the dog proceeds to follow you and try to jump again, simply turn around again. DO NOT SAY NO, DOWN OR PUT UP YOUR KNEE OR PUSH THEM OFF ETC, That is enabling them as you are giving them attention, which is what they wanted in the first place. If you ignore them, they will become bored and walk away. HTH GL

  • Your puppy can totally tell whats going on with you and the baby. He is playing a little too early though or if he jumps up there and just sits or snuggles on top of your belly then that is a protection thing. I have found out that my stepmothers 5 month old Yorkie puppy is the same way. She jumps there and then sits and watches. It is nothing more than protecting whats his/hers. If you are still concerned then the pillow is the best way to handle this.
