Side effects with Vitamin D drops?

Pedi suggested I give DD Vitamin D drops at our 3 month appt and I procrastinated doing it just until this past week.  I've noticed that DD went from only getting up once a night to eat, to twice, is super gassy, and didn't poop for 3 days straight.   Not to mention poop doesn't smell quite as pleasant (always smelled like fruit or buttered popcorn before).

Any other ladies who are giving Vitamin D drops seeing any reactions?

I am going to stop the drops temporarily to see if her sleep issues get better.  We live in southern CA so if the drops are making her sleep poorly, I'd rather just spend a bit of time in the sun every day to make sure she gets what she needs.

Re: Side effects with Vitamin D drops?

  • This is an interesting observation.  I had been a little lax in giving N his drops until a couple of weeks ago when I gave them to him consistently for several days.  It was right around then that he stopped pooping and his farts got smellier.  I haven't given them to him in probably a week and he pooped Friday and yesterday after 10 days of not pooping.  Maybe I will try giving them to him regularly again and see what happens.

  • hmmm...  i never thought of this.  dd2's poops have been smelling different lately.  i just assumed it was because she now goes a little longer between poops.  but i suppose it could be the d drops.  i haven't seen a change in sleep habits though.

  • the pedi suggested we give them at his two wk appt. he had the worst gas, was super cranky, and constipated a bit. we gave the poly vi sol drops. we asked the doctor about stopping at his 6 wk appt. he said to stop since there wasnt a huge need and we'd discuss it at 4 months.  At 4 months asked about it and said bwe can giveit another month and try again at 6 months. I think its the iron in them that causes the tummy upset though.

  • We had zero issues with tiv vo sol, I think poly vi sol might be the culprit. We haven't given them to her in ages and her sleep is awful sometimes, great others, her poops smell sometimes and other times they are like the newborn poo and we have not started any solids. So, it could just be normal.

  • What kind are you using?

Honestly, if you live in CA, I would just make sure she gets 15-20 minutes in the sun every day. The human body absorbs vitamin D better through the skin than through the GI tract.

That being said, you could always switch what you're using. I wanted to spring for the fancy kind at the co-op that are just vitamin D in oil. We got a cheaper kind that have vitamin E and flaxseed oil. I am really bad about giving them, but I do think she's gassier when she gets them. I'm guessing it's the flaxseed, but vitamin E can also be upsetting to little tummies. I wish I'd gotten the pricier stuff! It's already getting too cold for us to be outside for 20 minutes a day, so we for sure need the drops.

  • We use the D3 Child Life drops from Whole Foods.  I had heard about reactions with the poly-vi-sol so I stayed away on purpose.

I'll update if stopping the vitamins changes the reactions...it could totally just be a fluke.

  • We got a sample of the Poly Vi Sol Drops from the hospital when we delivered and they were horrible!  L had the worst stomach ache and cried and cried after we gave them to her.  I don't remember her being constipated or extra smelly, but we didn't give them to her but maybe one or two doses.

We found these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/tags-on-product/B003BVIBMO?ie=UTF8&redirect=true  which are amazing.  ONE drop on your nipple or a bottle nipple a day and that's it!  The little bottle is good for one year - it has 365 drops per bottle.  It's so easy to administer to the baby and there have been NO side effects.  We've been using them since L was 3 weeks old.  She gets all the other vitamins from me and my prenatal I'm still taking.

These are the ones I was saying I wish I had gotten!

We use Natural Factors- it's also just one drop a day, but it has more added ingredients than the one you posted.

We have these as well.  I asked the pedi this morning if they could cause constipation and she said absolutely not.
