C-sections

Question about pooping after CS/RCS

Hi, Ladies!  I haven't posted on this board before, but I just had my 2nd c-section on Halloween.  After my first, I was given stool softeners in the hospital and they made sure I had a bowel movement before I was able to go home.  This time, no stool softeners, and my OB told me that even though I hadn't pooped, as long as I was passing gas, then I was fine.

At this point (sorry if TMI!) I haven't pooped since last Sunday- a week!  I feel fine, and I pass gas when needed.  I have an appt to get my staples out on Monday, so I will talk to my OB about this then, but can anyone tell me if this is normal or totally out of whack and I should be worried and do something before Monday?

TIA!

  • Go to the pharmacy and get some stool softeners!

  • Speaking as an RN...You really should have had a BM by now.  As long as you are not feeling super bloated or having pain, it is not a big worry though.  However, I reccomend an OTC stool softner like colace or miralax.  Make sure u are getting plenty of fluids and fiber.  Also, know that if you are taking any pain meds, that these tend to slow things down even futher.

  • The pain meds make u constipated, so definitely get some stool softeners...that should help!
  • I'll have DH pick some up on the way home- thanks, everyone!
  • I went within a week but it was close to it.  I was given stool softeners in the hospital but was released before I went.  They kept asking me so much if I was passing gas though I thought I was going to get a prize for it LOL  Def get some stool softeners.  It still hurt even with them.  I sorta imagine that's a degree what labor feels like!  And let me just tell you after a week of eating and not pooping it will be a LOT and will take a while on the pot.

  • I was never given stool softeners in the hospital with either unless I requested them.  With my 1st c/s, I never thought of it so I never took them.  It was terrible.  So, with #2, I was taking them on my own before my c/s.  Even with taking them, it was almost 2 weeks before I pooped.  I was taking colace and senekot around the clock.  I had to take milk of magnesia and a stronger pill...I think dulcolax to finally go.  It was the worst ever!  Hope you get some relief soon!

  • They didn't check to make sure I had a bowel movement before I left the hospital either. No stool softeners either. I called at about the point you are at and the nurse told me to get Colace. I took two that night and two the next morning and then I had a BM. They said it was safe to take the Colace even though I was breastfeeding.

  • I would definitely get some stool softeners esp if you're still taking any of the pain meds ie percocet that they give you in the hospital.  I'm not sure when I had my first BM post c/s.  I do remember that the first time was easier than ~1-2 wks later after 1.5 wks of percocet.  I cringe still remembering how painful and uncomfortable it was.

  • It took me 6 days to have BM and when i told my OB, they were concerned.  Take stool softeners and drink prune juice (the prune juice really worked for me).  Like you, I didn't feel horrible, but after the BM, I felt so much better.  Good luck!

  • I was told that as long as I was passing gas then I was fine too. Little did I know that was terrible advice. I ended up not going to the bathroom for a week and was so constipated it gave me a hemorrhoid. I had to go see my OB because I had all this pressure in my bum but every time I tried to poop I felt like my butt was going to explode! He ended up giving me suppositories and within 30 min-hour I was relieved ;) lol I would just get some stool softeners first since you're not uncomfortable yet. If those dont work in 48 hours then I would go to your doc and see what he tells you.
  • Oh God... this brought back memories of my first PP poop. It was torture!

Stool softeners are the way to go. Make it easy on yourself. If OTC doesn't work, call your doctor.
