We just tried Mum Mums

I bought the Organic Rice because I like the idea of him playing with food as we will attempt BLW. The box says they dissolve fast but i don't think it's fast enough. DS started to suck on it but quickly broke a big chunk of it and I panicked! lol. He started to gag and with my finger I went fishing for the chunk, it had dissolved some but not enough IMO. DS seemed interested in it but I wish we would suck on it rather than trying to chomp on it! Half hour later he had one major spit up! The verdict: we'll try again in a few days but obviously the whole moving to solids is more nerve wracking than I thought Tongue Tied

Have you tried them/something similar? What has been your experience?

Re: We just tried Mum Mums

  • We have tried cheerios. I gave him a few to play with and then I gave him one in his mouth. He immediately tried to swallow it and started gagging. I never would have thought I would be able to get him out of the high chair as fast as I did. I tipped him head down and out it came. We tried again in a few days and he sucked on it for a few minutes. Now he has like 1 a night and sucks on it/chomps on it. I understand exactly how terrifying it can be!

Were Cheerios recommended by somebody?  I would do Gerber puffs before Cheerios and probably not until at least 6-7 months.

I also tried Mum Mums since my first did so great with them but my little guy did the same thing as the OPs and I had to swipe it out.  Definitely did not dissolve fast enough for me.  And these were okayed by the doc too.

  • I guess I don't think gagging is an emergency. Babies are going to gag when you start solids, no matter what you give them. That's normal. Gagging is not choking.

If you're doing BLW, get the book and read it. You'll feel much better about the whole thing.

  • We tried to give LO Mum mums. We got him down to his diaper, put him in his highchair and opened the pack (organic). I decided to try a bite before giving it to him. There was absolutely NO WAY I would have given those to him. I dont know if the ones I bought were stale or what, but they did not disolve at all.  They just sat in my mouth and turned into a lumpy mess. I am so glad I tried them first.

We might revisit mum mums in a month or two.

Yep the pedi said to give them a try because I have a milk allergy so we are staying away from cheesy foods for ds for awhile. It is mostly for him to practice his pincer grasp.

I've been looking like crazy for the book around my city, no one has it! So I'm ordering it online this weekend. I've been reading like every post on the boards at the BLW website.

  • We tried the Mum Mums today. The organic ones. He ended up wearing more than he ate, and he got bored after just half, but there wasn't any gagging.

  • I finally bought him some Mum Mums, and I think it's the first food he's actually eaten. No gagging, no spit up. Just very intent gnawing and a bit got spit back out and some just didn't get eaten at all.

For Owen, it was a total success. I pushed my luck with some avocado afterward, and he was having none of that.
