How to clean PnP "mattress" that's been peed on

I had my 2 year old niece here today. I put her in the PnP for her nap. When I went to get her, I discovered she had taken off her pants and diaper and peed everywhere! I had just thrown a sheet on the mattress part, so it didn't have a waterproof mattress pad on it. Now it's soaked in urine. How do I clean it?????

  • I thought PnP mattresses were vinyl covered.  I would remove the sheet (launder that) and then wipe down the mattress with one of those Clorox disinfectant wipes or something similar.

It's not really a big deal.

It doesn't feel "cheap" enough to be vinyl. It's got to be some kind of thin fabric. It's not really a mattress, it's just the hard part you put in the bottom hat you use as a mattress.  I thought about wiping it down with a disinfectant wipe (which I'll probably do), but I'm worried about how to dry it out and not have it smell like pee forever. This is the PnP we travel with and the holidays are coming up. Tongue Tied

  • You're right. I just checked our PnP and for some reason I think it was more plastic coated than it is.  I don't know how you would clean that, though.

Some suggestions I found online have been to use a pet urine remover and then let it dry in the sun.

  • What brand? We have a Chicco and there is a zipper on the bottom of the "mattress" part. You can just take the boards out and throw the fabric part in the washing machine.

No, it's a Graco. No zipper. Crying

  • One of our boys fell asleep in our bed a couple of months ago and, um, peed more than his diaper could accommodate, soaking part of our pillowtop mattress.  It was gross.

I found a tip online about spraying the pee spot with full-strength white vinegar then blotting, and it worked!  I put the vinegar in a spray bottle and just sprayed it on until the area I was spraying was pretty wet, then blotted it with a clean towel.  I did that over and over again until I couldn't smell pee anymore (although I could smell lots of vinegar!)  We let it dry all day, and by that night only a faint lingering smell of vinegar remained.  By the next night, we couldn't smell anything.

Maybe that same method would work for your PNP thingy.

i clean with vinegar alot and you can add essential oil to it to kill the vinegar smell. we use orange, lemon or some other ones we keep on hand.

You can replace it!!  Look it up on Graco's website.  One of our cats peed in DD's PNP and we were able to get a brand new mattress for like $25.  Sucked to have to pay for a new one, but it was better than a lingering pee smell or replacing the whole PNP.

  • Depending on the amount of pee and level of effort, I'd be one to replace it too. Especially if it's something you use on a regular basis.

  • How about adding a mattress topper? We use the MamaDoo Kids mattress topper and we love it! It makes the PNP more comfy and also because it folds in 3 you can travel with it. The vinegar trick is wonderful, BTW! Good luck!
