Why do you get the infant seat instead of just going and purchasing a convertible car seat that can start at 5lbs and go up to 35lbs rear facing than turn around and go front facing for up to 65lbs or to 1 year of age?? Is it simply b/c an infant will be to tiny in the stroller without the infant carrier??
Re: Infant Seats vs. Convertible Car Seats
Infant seats are safer than convertible car seat for newborns.
It's also more convenient to be able to get them strapped in when you're inside and then lock the carrier into the base when you get to the car - not to mention if they fall asleep in the car seat you can bring them inside just as they are and they'll keep on snoozin'.
Because it is simply safer.
You NB will be drowning in the infant seat, imagine a seat 3 times as big how tiny they would be?
You have a place to keep them and not have to wake them when they fall asleep in the car which 99% of babies do, DD slept in hers at friends houses, shopping, it fits into our stroller.
And you do not utrn a child at 1 anymore, you keep them rear facing as long as you can, DD will rear face until at the very earliest 2. The neck is not strong enough to handle front facing until closer to 2 years, rear facing a broken leg can be fixed but a broken neck can't.

I really don't think that it's a matter of safety, but convenience. I think it will just be simpler in some situations to snap out the whole seat rather than fuss trying to get out a sleeping baby. Or put the baby in the carrier inside when it's 11 degrees out rather than standing with the door of the car open to wrestle them in.
Additionally, I like that you just need a second base for another car, rather than moving the whole damn seat back and forth.
I think babies would be just as safe in the convertibles (at least according to consumer reports guides) as long as they are rated for the proper weight.
No, studies have shown infant car seats are safer than convertibles for newborns. Sure, they passed safety ratings. All car seats must pass minimum standards. That doesn't mean they are all rated the same. FWIW, most experts completely discount all ratings done by Consumer Reports. I highly recommend this site. It will answer all your questions.

Also, jar is right. Extended Rear Facing and extended harnessing are so much safer. I plan on rearfacing until at least age 2 as well. I would like to continue as long as I can.
You clearly need to do more research.
