Baby Names

Sakura

This name has been on my guilty pleasure list since I was a teenager. Its pronounced Sah-koo-rah and its Japanese for "Cherry blossom". Its also a very popular girls' names in Japan and is considered a classic girls' name there.

I used to really want to use this name, but DH vetoed it b/c it doesn't sound right with our very Western ln.

WDYT of the name Sakura?

Re: Sakura

  • DH really likes it and I don't mind it. The only thing that bothers me about it is there are no good nns that you can get from it. I think it is very pretty though.

  • It was the name of a Japanese restaurant where I grew up, so that's all I can think of when I hear it! I love lots of Japanese name though... And, the meaning is beautiful.

  • I've always thought  it was a pretty song . . . I guess that makes me predisposed to liking the name.
  • I think of the Sakura bloom ring sling, lol. I can see Saki as a NN, which is not awesome.

Why does there need to be a nn, exactly?

This name is so pretty on its own, I feel like a nn would just ruin it. Besides, Saki is a legitimate name in Japan, although I suppose if you most use a nn, you could go out on a limb and call her Blossom. *Shrugs*

I like the name and think that Sookie has potential for a nn.

I actually gravitate toward names that don't have obvious NNs because people take such liberties with them. For example, Catherine is beautiful, but I won't use it for my kid because of the endless NN possibilities. I pronounce Saki like Sake (or at least very closely) and wouldn't want my kid to go by the same name as an alcoholic beverage. I'm not saying that should be a deal breaker for OP, but NNs are definitely something to consider when choosing a name because it's likely that there will be people who want to shorten the name, even if you don't want them to.

  • I think it's lovely for a family with a connection to Japan.  If you or DH are Japanese, or part Japanese, I think it works, and I don't think it needs a nickname.

Why do so many people always ask about nicknames?  Not every name has to have one.  I do not get it.

  • We have a Japanese restaurant called this, so that's what I think initially. I like the meaning better than the actual name.

  • It has a pretty sound, but I think I have to agree with your DH.  Maybe for a middle name?

  • I love it.. DH has a cousin who is half Japanese with this name.  I don't know that I'd use it if I didn't have some sort of heritage there though...

  • I like Sakura, even though it is very commonly used in Japanese restaurant names in the US.  I'm a fan of many Japanese girl names.

My issue is that it doesn't go at ALL with your other kids' names.  Are you or DH Japanese?

  • Sakura is a fine name, although NMS. I personally wouldn't use it without having some Japanese heritage (which I don't), but I definitely wouldn't use it with Kenna and James.

I love the name (I am a Japanese teacher, though, and would get it instantly.)

FYI, saki is prounonced sah-key, whereas the beverage sake is pronounced sah-kay. In Japanese, two very different sounds.

  • My first thought when I saw this post..Lush's Sakura bath bomb. It's one I've never tried but it does sound inviting. :)

Actually, my DH's great-great-grandmother was Japanese. Her name was Mimi, although she died before my DH could meet her.

And we actually don't have any kids. Kenna and James are the names of our cats, who we've had for about a yr now.
