Talk to me about midwives.

I just found out that I am expecting #2. I used an OB last time and I liked them during my pregnancy, but the whole birthing process was so impersonal. One of the OBs pretty much walked in to catch DS and then stitched me up and left.

I don't know if I want something different this time around, but I want to do some research. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I'm pregnant with my first and I've known from the start that I want a midwife.  If you think about it, midwives have been around for centuries longer than Doctors have.  You should look into midwives in your area, and also see if your delivery hospital has a Doula available (birth coach).  I'm meeting my midwife for the first time next thursday, I'll let you know how she is!  I live in Arvada, so if you're close by I can send you her info.

OK...I obviously didn't know from the beginning and while midwives have been around for much longer, there is nothing wrong with OBs. With that said, I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for me as to where to START looking for a midwife.

I don't think I want to deliver at a center, but having a midwife at our hospital would be great. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am in southern Denver and we delivered at Skyridge last time. I did see that Littleton Adventist Hospital has a midwifery program.

I highly recommend looking at the Mountain Midwifery Center. They have 5 midwives and 4 nurses and the care they provide is out of this world. They are wonderful! In the event you will need a transfer to a hospital, you are pre-admitted to Swedish Medical Center. Do check them out!

I've been seeing the midwives at University of Colorado Hospital.  There are two groups and I see the Center for Midwifery.  I totally recommend them.  There are 5 midwives in the practice and you schedule appointments with all of them and then whoever is on call delivers your baby.  I haven't delivered yet (due 12/2) but have been SO happy with all 5 and their treatment of me.  I think they are more personal than an OB/GYN.  As I understand it, OBs are primarily trained as surgeons and some may not be as open to the natural birth process.  Midwives are trained to deliver normal pregnancies and are less likely to push ceasereans or interventions.  That's my basic understanding.   Anyways, I really recommend them, especially if you are wanting a natural birth.
