Midwives at Magee ? (UPDATED)

I just started going to M@M a few months ago since I'm new-ish to the area.  I have my first prenatal appointment with them in two weeks at 8w and I'm wondering if they do an u/s at that appointment.  Anyone else use M@M for their pregnancy?

UPDATE:  I had my appointment at 8w2d.  I asked for an u/s just to be sure we had a heartbeat.  The midwife did the u/s and even though she's not a trained u/s tech, she was able to show me the heartbeat after a little bit of searching.  Seems like if you ask they'll do a quick one.

Re: Midwives at Magee ? (UPDATED)

  • I used them for both of my pregnancies and LOVE them!!! They did not do an u/s w/ the twins but we had done one w/ our RE. (I started w/ an OB for my first pregnancy and switched) I would imagine they wouldn't do an u/s until somewhere around 18-20 weeks w/o a reason.
  • I had a quicky ultrasound at my first visit!  Maybe if you ask!  (they call the machine "Old sparky", cuz it's old) It's nice to see the baby and realize that all the sickness is for a real reason!  I also had a Nuchal translucency scan at 12.5 weeks.  That's elective, but you can have it done and the Midwife will write a script for it along with bloodwork (first trimester screen).  Just check and see how much it costs with your insurance first.

    Congrats and good luck!

  • I just made my first appointment with them this morning, won't be going until December 12th...I'm hoping for an u/s at my first visit, just to make sure baby's in there, lol!

Hope all goes well for you1

  • I don't believe it's routine then. I had one at about 13 weeks because there we were not sure of my due date. It really has more to do with your insurance than the practice you go to; insurance will usually only pay for the anatomy scan unless there is a problem necessitating an u/s.

  • Yeah... I had a scan to verify # of babies - that was NOT covered.  Then I had a scan for Nuchal Translucency, that WAS covered...  the not covered ones with my insurance were like $300...

  • I just had my 8w6d appointment this afternoon. They did not do an ultrasound. They probably won't check the heartbeat either. They probably will have some one talk to you about a research study they are doing. The study does an early ultra sound though. (I think that's what she said I can always look at the papers when I'm not riding in the car)
