How to start reading?

DS has known his letters for well over a year, although I don't think he has the phonetics down.  However, for the past month or so he wants to know what every word says and "reads" by pointing to each word left to right after we tell him.  I feel like he's reaching a new level of reading readiness, but I don't know what to do with it!  Suggestions?

  • I would start with phonics and get him to learn the sounds of letters. You Tube has some great videos.

  • Leap frog letter frog is a good dvd about phonics.  Also practice some sight reading,  like put words on a card that he can recognize and play games mixing them up and picking them out.  Or follwoing actions such as go stop jump.

  • I'm so glad you started this thread!  I'm very interested to see what suggestions come up because my daughter loves to figure out what letters certain words start with.  Once she does, she'll try to come up with more words that start with that letter/sound.  I wish I had an answer but I'm looking forward to reading the other responses. :)

  • Start reading him some of the basic 1st reader books.  Point to the words as you go, point to the words as you read them - have him read with you.  Word on phonics.  Check out the website starfall.com.

DD loves all the Leap Frog DVD.  We have them all and she learned all her letters and letter sounds at age 2.  She loves all the talking word ones as well.

We also have the Preschool Prep DVDs which she really likes, especially the sight word ones.  She loves picking out the words in books that she knows and she is reading easy to read books now.

  • Does he know his letter sounds yet?

That's where to go next.  The leap frog DVD's are excellent for this and are backed up by the fridge magnets (they use the same song).

From there I highly recommend BOB books.  Great beginning readers that build confidence quickly and get you on your way FAST.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
