Is a Sonohysterogram much different than HSG?

Seems like the same thing?!  I have mine on Monday along with  mock transfer.  Did you have cramping with SIS?  My last HSG was pretty uncomfortable so I am nervous!!

Re: Is a Sonohysterogram much different than HSG?

  • Nooooo!!  For me, it was nothing like an HSG, which was awful.  You'll feel a little bit of pressure, maybe some mild cramping, but that's it.  And it's over fast.  Good luck!  You'll do a great job.

  • Yes, they're very different. I'm a radiology tech by profession and my whole career has been in medical imaging.

The HSG is an Xray study that requires use of contrast media (often called "dye" but that term is not truly accurate because there's no color involved) in the uterus. It's this contrast that causes much of the discomfort associated with HSGs.

The sonohystergram, as the name implies, is an ultrasound study. Saline, not contrast, is put into the uterus.

  • I had my SHG and mock-transfer on Monday.  It was a breeze, you'll be fine!

My HSG wasn't that bad for me, but the SHG was even easier.  For the HSG it had to be done in Radiology, but my RE did the SHG in his office (treatment room I mean).  In terms of discomfort, the HSG was definitely worse.  I only felt a minor pinch during the SHG, and discomfort from the speculum.  The mock-transfer part took literally a few seconds after the SHG was done.

  • OK, hate to disagree with everyone else but...  My HSG was fine, just some medium cramping during.  The SHG on the other hand hurt like an SOB.  Cramping during and after.  I just had my 2nd one on Monday and I took ibuprophen and Oxycodone before and still it was very painful for me.

     Sorry if I scared you.

    Good Luck

  • Glad I read this post. My SHG is in a few months and I am glad to hear it is nothing like the HSG. THAT one sucked. I think I threw up 2x and almost passed out once.

This was my experience, too. But everyone is different.
