Painting at school..question

Do your kids wear smocks for painting at school? My girls preschool class doesnt put smocks on the kids and one of my girls has come home with paint covered shirts the last few times. And the paint doesnt wash out. I want to ask the teacher if she could wear a smock but the other kids dont. And I doubt mine would agree too. I guess I just have to assume her clothes will get ruined? Thanks

  • We were warned that Monday is finger painting day and they don't have enough smocks to go around so nobody gets one for that. The teacher also tipped us off that she's had great luck using seltzer to remove the paint. I've found an overnight oxiclean soak does beautifully as well.

  • I send DD in play clothes.  Most of her "school" clothes have some sort of stain on them now.  At least you know they are having fun :)

  • Nope, no smocks at our preschool...but I've never had trouble getting the paint out, so they must use a washable kind.

  • My center has paint smocks and they also use water based only paint so even if it gets in their clothes, it comes out.  I personally don't send my kids to school in anything that I will be upset about if it gets ruined.  They are kids and they are doing art projects, playing outside and having fun and I honestly feel that if they come home a little messy - they had a great day.  I worry more when they are spotless clean when I show up at the end of the day.  I would ask the center if they could be sure to use water based washable paint or to add some soap to it before the kids use it.

  • They have smocks but he still comes home with paint on his cloths.  I finally started just sending him in the paint stained shirts.  It really means at this age that I stopped buying "nice" cloths because he's not going to wear them on non-school days either.
  • They wear big old t-shirts over the clothes for craft time. She usually comes home clean, which is amazing given that she comes home with some fantastic painted crafts. That said, they do ask us to only send them in play clothes, stuff that can get wet, dirty in the sandbox, whatever.

  • Thanks girls. Yeah, I guess I shouldnt get too hung up on their fancy Target/Walmart shirts.
  • I would send a extra "big" shirt along and tell the teacher that you want her to wear it, as a DC teacher myself if a parent has a request like keeping my child clean because of a very messy art project then of coarse I would do it.  And as the teacher I bet your child would put it on if told they had to.
