Kind of an awkward question...

I posted about itching last night, but not only does my stomach itch during the day (no rash or bumps) but also near my underwear lines near my nether-region. I don't think it is a yeast infection because it is more on my skin there and not anywhere else and I don't have other symptoms. I did buy new underwear, but it has lace and it has been cold so I don't know if it is just dry skin or something else weird.

I don't want to run to my doctor is it isn't a big deal, so I wanted to see what others thought first and see if anyone has ever experienced this before.

  • Could it be your skin stretching?  That will make you itchy

  • Do you have stretch marks already? Is it possible that you're allergic to your laundry detergent, or now have a sensitivity to it? Do you put lotion on and have you tried switching brands/going with a scentless lotion? Are you itching around your underwear line towards the outside, or are you itching closer to your opening? If it's around the outside, I wouldn't worry too much as it's likely that it's just dry skin, but if you're experiencing itching near or at the opening I would probably call the doctor.

I was experiencing HORRIBLE itching all over my stomach and the top of my pubic area across, over and through my stretch marks. Lotion did nothing and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was. It turned out to be a combo - the lotion wasn't strong enough to keep my skin hydrated (it was scented and scented lotions contain alcohol which evaporates faster, I've been told) so I switched to a vaseline like salve (called bag-balm, I highly recommend it if you've heard of it) and I stopped wearing the band in my maternity pants. I think I've developed a sensitivity to either the material or the soap we wash the clothes in because I'm fine as long as I don't have that restrictive material rubbing up against my stretch marks (my shirts don't really touch my stomach).

  • It is down further where my underwear lines are, between my legs, and it even looks a little red and irritated. And get more so when my pants rub near it when I walk Embarrassed

I don't really have any stretch marks.

  • I have pretty severe itching across the top of my pubic hair too.  It is so uncomfortable and not something you can scratch in front of 30 middle school students!

Tuesday my dr. said it's no big deal.  Probably dry skin stretching.  She recommended no shaving (which I had already stopped), try lots of different moisturizers including aquaphor, and get some less tight plain cotton panties.  None of this has helped yet, but it's only been 2 days.

    Good luck!

I would probably switch to a lace-free underwear, and maybe a size up? Maybe it's a combo of the lace material and the fact that your hips are widening so the underwear is just a tad too small - just enough for you to not notice.

  • Here's a tidbit of info that may help:

Lotions contain alcohol to help absorb into the skin quicker. This can also help dry them out and why the bottle suggests applying often. Lotions only stay on the skin for 30 minutes.

Anything labeled a Cream is going to be more moistirizing for your skin. Creams will stay on your skin for up to 2-3 hours. Look for an unscented cream as it will irritate less. I LOVE Nivea hand cream because I wash my hands frequently, and it keeps my hands soft/not irritated for far longer than a lotion.

Body butters provide the most moisture. I personally love VS body butters, but they don't irritate my skin- it may yours. If you look for a body butter, try coca butter or something else natural. Target has a great line of naturally scented/enriched body butters that smell amazing.

  • Sounds like skin stretching to me, too.  My doc recommended Aveeno with cocoa butter in it, it smells yummy.  I think drinking more water will alleviate some of the itching, too.

  • Sounds like your skin stretching.  Have you tried Eucerin lotion?  You can find it in the drugstore and it is great for sensitive, extra dry skin (I use it all winter).  It's super moisturizing so it should help as your skin expands..

  • Thank you for all the replies and advice.  I am going to go buy some even better underwear after work and some cream.  I have been using St. Ive's with Shea Butter, but maybe something thicker would help.  Also, thanks for calming my nerves, I never had something like this happen, so I had no idea what was going on!
