Cloth diaper users with city water

I have a some questions.

First, it seems that no matter what I do, DD's diapers smell like a swimming pool. Am I the only one with this issue? Does anyone know how to combat it? I've tried different detergents, adding Calgon, adding vinegar, stripping...the smell won't go away! I have noticed at times when I'm drinking water, I can smell chemicals so maybe the diapers are holding onto whatever is added to the water. I didn't have this issue a couple of months ago.

I'm also wondering what detergent seems to work the best with San Antonio water. From the CD board, people told me to try Tide. I've had to strip my diapers twice when they started repelling. I tried using less Tide and the diapers aren't getting clean enough. I'm tempted to try the RnG for hard water but I thought maybe I could get some recommendations here first.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

  • We use rocking green, I got a sample when I bought from gobabygoshoP.com she is local and is very helpful.
You can find that detergent at once upon a child on thousand oaks and 281. They sell out quickly so maybe call first so it's not a wasted trip.
My diapers don't have a smell to them, so I Don't know about that problem. Before I used rockin green I used all free and clear.

    Good luck!

  • We have a water softner, but I use tide.   What I do is a presoak with the tide for a few hours and then wash with an extra rinse and I haven had too many issues with smell.   I use about a 1/3 of the amount for the smallest load on the cup.   I also only hang dry my diapers, I don't know if it has any effect on it.   I do at times use vinegar but not often and more so do to when diapers have sat for a few days.

  • We use Rockin' Green for hard water.  I tried using Tide, but could only find the newer "Ultra" version, which doesn't work as well as the original.  RnG works best for us-- I do a cold rinse w/o detergent, hot wash w/ detergent, then an extra rinse.  I usually buy mine from Liz at Go Baby Go.

Thanks for the answers! I bought some Rockin' Green for hard water. I haven't used it yet, but will start tomorrow. I already do the same routine as you, LTrain so hopefully the RnG will do the trick!
