At my last follow up with my obgyn about ppd, I asked if I needed to wean off Zoloft (50mg). He said no it was fine to stop when my prescription ran out. I kinda side eyed him bc I have always read/heard it is necessary to wean yourself off antidepressants. Since I was on such a low dose I thought maybe he was right and was alright to go ahead and stop them. My perscription ran out last week. Monday was a really rough day I was really emotional and had a few break downs. Today I am incredibly dizzy. I even had to leave work. I thought maybe I was coming down with something but I can't help thinking it had to do with just stopping the meds altogether without weaning. What has been your experience? I also felt like I really wasn't ready to just stop them. I will be calling the ob in the morning for input. I just wanted to see how others felt too. Thanks.
Re: Discontinuing ppd meds
Your OB should have NEVER let you stop cold turkey. Remember the Zoloft was providing extra serotonin and now that you stopped it without stepping down it causes withdrawal. I am so sorry your OB told you to do this but the side effects should be over within a week or so. Also stepping down decreases your chance of a relapse of symptoms. The thing about antidepressants is when you are feeling better.....then its not the time to stop them. It means its working. Zoloft does make a 25mg pill so maybe your OB could have you take that dose for a week and then the following week decrease to taking it every other day. Good luck!!!
I agree, it sounds like you're having withdrawls.
I haven't gone off Zoloft yet, or talked to my doctor about it, but I have 3 close friends who have. 2 weaned off slowly.
The other was told to also wean off slowly..I think she told me her OB said to break the pill in 1/2 for a week or 2, then do the 1/2 pill every other day for another week or 2. She was also told that it was NOT recommended to go off right at the start of (or during) winter because so many people here have seasonal depression (we're in MI where winters can be rough and dark). Something else to think about...
