You can make the stuff yourself! It's really easy.

7 oz chocolate bits (or really anything you want to be in there)

2 tbsp coconut oil

Melt the chocolate in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring frequently.

Stir the coconut oil into the melted chocolate.

Give it a few minutes in the fridge to cool off.

Voila!

  • Since a lot of people don't have coconut oil on hand in their kitchens...

using your micro-safe cereal bowl size bowl... put some chocolate chips in the bottom with a tsp or so of butter and a squirt of honey (I know, such an exact recipe)...  Microwave ~45sec.-1min. until the chips melt enough that you can stir and they'll melt the rest of the way, stir until smooth, spoon onto icecream...  Wha-la...

  • Yeah, I thought coconut oil was one of the "scary, not on hand" ingredients, but it was right in the baking aisle and you don't have to refrigerate it after opening. It keeps for ages.

But thanks for an alternate, too. :)

Edit: The whole thing about the magic shell is that it hardens. I wouldn't think that the honey/butter one would do that...

  • It does harden as hard or harder as the Magic Shell stuff!  When I was a honey queen it was one of my recipes that I used for demos..  The key is not skimping on the butter.  Of course the funny part is I learned the recipe from my Dad who is not exactly Mr. Crocker on most food things...

Other than Super Walmart I'd never seen Coconut Oil in the store until just recently, but I also know people who are allergic to coconut...

  • Funny you posted this - I just bought the stuff for DH last night.  I'll have to try this when he runs out.

  • Coconut oil is actually very easy to use in cooking and baking! It's also delicious, and very good for you!  I use it for sauteeing quite frequently, and also just pre melt it for use in baking.  It also does a fine job of moisturizing dry hands ;-)  (Just wanted to offer my two cents to those of you that are intimidated!)
