I say go to the Austin Zoo. I went to CapofTx and was disappointed.
FWIW, For us, "disappointed" is an understatement. We went in September and the Capital of Texas Zoo has some great animals but the facility is still deeply under construction. Many animals do not even have signage; and some animals that do have signage, it's just a computer printed piece of paper. Much of the 'trail' around the zoo is sand and difficult for new walkers to "wade" through--thankfully we didn't even attempt a stroller but that presented its own challenges. On the other hand, with one child you may have an easier/more enjoyable experience.

It was very difficult to maneuver our stroller through the gravel. There were lots of jogging strollers there (we went during the summer).
