Has anyone taken LO to a therapist (psychologist)?

And if so, I'd love any feedback. I'm at wit's end with DS's behavior and I'm fairly certain that some of it is above and beyond the norm for this age (as far as aggression and anger). I've been referred to someone, but am looking for anyone who might have gone through this.

Re: Has anyone taken LO to a therapist (psychologist)?

  • I haven't but I had similar concerns about my own DS and asked his pedi for advice.  He referred me to a child therapist and the therapist and I had an hour long conversation about it via phone and she gave me strategies to use and helped me work through the parts that were hardest for me.  She was able to show me the situations from his perspective and help me work through some issues.  It was a huge help.  I hope your referral is helpful!
  • We are currently having our son (age 4 yrs, 5 mos) evaluated.  So far, my husband and I have filled out about 3 or 4 different form evaluations and his teacher has filled out two and he's met with the psychologist for an hour twice.  He's done a couple of tests (including an IQ test) and is doing another one next week called a TOVA(sp?).  I should know more in a week or so.  I'll try to remember to check in with you here afterwards.

My take on anyone having your child see a therapist is that I think it can only be helpful.  As the mother, you know best 99% of the time, so take what you want from the therapist's evaluation and try to just ignore the rest and/or get a second therapist's evaluation.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

  • My LO has been evaluated but it was a mandatory thing because she was a fost/adopt child.  I just want to chime in and say that I would check with your insurance and see if you can get an in-home evaluation.  My LO responded well and things were much more productive when a psych showed up at our home and came in as if they were a friend rather than going to a psych office.  I'd really try for the in-home service.  And ours who came out indicated we can do it annually for no charge (covered by insurance) and much more often if she was actually diagnosed with something.
  • My DD went through eighteen months of therapy starting when she was four. She was there for a specific reason (abuse), but was evaluated just like any typical child would be.

Basically, the first meeting was between me and the psychologist. I had to answer a huge packet of questions about her behavior, personality, etc. and the psychologist asked me several questions. We had one other appointment with the psychologist where she met DD and evaluated her using questions and some interactive play activities. From there the psychologist came up with a plan regarding treatment.

Feel free to ask me any specific questions you might have.
