Stress Test :-(

I just returned from my appointment where I learned that my amniotic fluid is low, up until this point everything has been going beautiful. Now another ultrasound is scheduled for this Friday as well as a stress test. :-( I honestly don't want anything that could possibly induce labor, but I have to do what's best for baby. Anyone else had the stress test already? How was it for you? I know this may sound silly, but even though I am 37 weeks it's just now hitting me that I am going to be a parent...I am so nervous!!!!!!!

Re: Stress Test :-(

  • I have a non stress test every week.   They just hook you up to the monitors and when the baby moves you press a button.  Only takes 20 minutes if your baby is active.  Drink some juice or have a good meal before you go in.

  • Sorry you received scary news. Hopefully it's no big deal. Doctors here do non stress tests routinely here and so I get one every two weeks. No big deal, I almost fall asleep during it :)

  • An NST is no big deal. I got them every week for about the last 2 months of my pregnancy. Good luck, and hopefully everything will be fine!

  • Thanks Ladies :-) But I am wondering if a NST and a ST is something completly diff., they specifically said 'stress test'. This is the info I read on it: usually an injection of Pitocin will be given and you will be monitored to see how your baby responds to the contractions via the electronic fetal monitor. I am not too fond of the idea of Pitocin being involved, they say the risks are going into labor or fetal distress :-(
  • At my office when you get the test, you sit in a comfy recliner and drink juice and are hooked up to a monitor. Nothing to be worried about at all!

  • I found out on Friday my AFI is abnormally low, too. I am now scheduled for a NST and ultrasound twice a week. I sit in a reclainer for 20 mins with an EFM strapped to my belly. Since Friday, I've managed to get my AFI up two points. Be sure take it easy - no more work (if possible), no exercising, no errands, no chores, etc. Drink tons of water. Good luck!

  • You're not having a NST. What you are having is completely different. It should still be no big deal though. The dose of pitocin they give you is itty bitty compared to what they give to induce labor. The chance of it throwing you in to labor are very small. The risk of fetal distress is a real one because that's exactly what they are checking for, to see if contractions cause your baby to become distressed. It's done in a controlled environment and your baby will be continuously monitored. If your baby does show signs of distress, they will know that labor will cause fetal distress and be able to deliver in a way that will be safe for you and your baby.
  • Thank you so much, that makes me feel so much better!
