I'm not really sure how Patterson came up with name, either, but in the series all of the characters are mutant bird-kids, who escaped from a secret lab known as The School and once they were out, they just pretty much named themselves. Although, it was mentioned that Max choose the ln "Ride" b/c of Sally Ride and the fn "Maximum" b/c she's the maximum or the, I guess, best.

The other main characters are Fang, Iggy, Nudge, The Gasman (AKA Gazzy), Angel, and Total (talking dog with wings).
