I was talking to my sister earlier about her friend who has a baby 6 weeks older than DS, so 10 months old now. She's concerned about him because of what and how much she's feeding him. Today for lunch she fed him 2 grilled cheese sandwiches, a pouch of pureed sweet potatoes, and a cookie. He gets breakfast and dinner too, as well as 5-6 bottles of formula per day.
He weighs 34 pounds. That's the 75th percentile for a 3 year-old.
She wants to say something but she doesn't know what or how. I told her to forward some links about healthier baby feeding, but I'm thinking now it might be more serious than that. This woman is my sister's best friend and this little boy is her godson, so it's not like they're just casual acquaintances. What would you say and how would you say it?
Re: WWYD?
Yikes.
I wouldn't say anything. The pedi will, for sure.
What did the pedi say at the babys 9 month checkup?
If the baby is really that hungry then I think one grilled cheese and sweet potato are fine, but she needs to cut out the cookie and all that formula. If the baby is still hungry after one grilled cheese and veggie then offer fruit, another veggie and water. If the baby is eating a well rounded diet the formula could be cut out at that age.
I had a friend who was feeding her baby 8 oz bottles of formula ( and she said that sometimes he wanted a 2nd after he finished the first bottle) for a long time. It's scary what people think is acceptable
This.
Wow that's awful that she feel she has to feed her LO that much. The only thing I can think of is a more passive agressive approach...but maybe have your sister find a used book at half price books (or another used bookstore) about baby nutrition and she can give it to her friend. She can say "I ran into a friend of mine who had this book and wanted to give it to someone with a kid LO's age since it was really helpful and opened their eyes on what baby needs as far as feeding."
