Surgery/anesthesia

Hi there. Long time bf'ing mom here (1st DD for 19 months, 2nd DD will be 17 months tomorrow and still going). I had surgery today and they told me I was to wait 4 hours after anesthesia and then pump before breastfeeding. Is that really necessary, though? Wouldn't the meds work their way out of my system after 4 hours just like alcohol and everything else? Why the need to pump and dump at that point? I'm questioning the knowledge of whoever told me that... but then again, don't want to take chances.

It's just that at this point I probably don't produce much more anyway and I NEVER pump. It's such a pain! Anyone know for sure?
