Food Allergy

At my wits end!

About 2 weeks ago I noticed DD would break out in a HORRIBLE red splotchy rash all over her face when I fed her. About 30 minutes after stopping eating, it would fade. She was on Similac Advance and her ped said she had a milk allergy, so we started the Soy. She broke out horribly from the Soy too. So we then moved to Alimentum. At first it seemed to be working great. But now, she is STILL breaking out all over her face and chest when eating. The rash looks like it is partly baby acne with rough little pimply spots on her cheeks. But she gets the splotchiness on her forehead and on the outline of her face.

What could she possibly be allergic to in the Alimentum? Could it be something in the bottle nipple that is causing this? Help!

Re: At my wits end!

  • sorry you're dealing with this.

Alimentum formula has traces of milk in it.  So if your LO's allergy to milk is high, she may react to it.  I would have the pedi prescribe you a different formula (like elecare - i think that one is completely milk/soy free) -but it's a bit pricy so i would check with your insurance (sometimes you may need to argue that it needs to be covered)

    good luck!

  • My daughter was severely allergic to milk and soy, and alimentum did not work for her.  She still reacted.  I know she is very young, but I would be tempted to make an appointment with a pediatric allergist for their advice.  They probably won't test her at this age, but it is nice to see what the specialist thinks.  If they think there is an actual allergy, they may give a prescription for Neocate or Elecare, which are amino acid based formulas.

  • Alimentum is a hydrolysate formula, meaning that it is still milk based but made up of partially broken down milk protein chains.  LO's who have a milk soy protein intolerance usually switch to a hydrolysate formula and do well.  However, there are some kids who are more sensitive (which it sounds like your LO is) and they end up needing an elemental formula like Neocate or EleCare.  I would talk to your doctor about trying one of those.  And be sure to give it time when switching formulas, there may be a transition period.  I hope your LO feels better soon!
