When do you up "oz" in BM bottles?

My 3 1/2 month old little guy eats every 3-4hrs, EBF when I am not at work (which is 4days/week).  Then he is up 1-2x at night to eat still.  He gets 3 oz bottles every 3 hr while away from me 3days/week while I work.  His DCP have never acted like he needs more and I never really bottle feed him when I am with him, so I dont know how satisfied he is.  I just give him one every other week or so while out to eat or something and he seems ok.  Is there an age at which you start to up the oz of BM or just leave it at 3??

  • You don't ever really need to up the oz in BF bottles. As LO starts spacing out feedings you can put more in each bottle depending on the amount of time in between feedings - 3 oz for 3 hours, 4oz for 4 hours, etc.

  • My LO never went above 4oz of bm and she had them until she was over a year.

  • DD is 5 months and hasn't made it past 4 oz (except for her middle of the night bottle, sometimes she will take 5 oz).  We went from 3.5 to 4 oz around 3 months.  I've tried giving more than that but she doesn't finish them.
  • My boys still only take 4oz bottles at a time.

  • My LO is 3 &1/2 mos and is getting 4oz of BM too. She is EBF 5-6 days a week, she will take bottles the 1 day a week I work and then here and there if I go out with out her. She has taken 5oz a few times when she is really unsatisfied.  Most often she is completly content with only 4oz tho.
  • If he's not fussing for more and is gaining weight well, then you're good! DS was always a huge eater and at 3.5 months we would regularly go through 6-oz bottles and sometimes more (especially during a growth spurt...he once downed 8 oz of BM during his 6-week growth spurt). We could give him a 4-oz bottle and he would FREAK OUT if you didn't have more on standby. Sounds like you're doing fine so far!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

     This.

DS used to take 3x4oz bottles at daycare, for a total of 12 oz.  Now he takes 2x6oz, which still totals to 12 oz.

  • From what I understand, the calories in you BM increases as time goes on, so he'll probably keep  eating.  If he seems satisfied with the amount you're giving (and he'll let you know), I wouldn't increase it.
