Stand in the driveway or answer the door?

I can't decide which to do!

Last year we got a lot of kids but DH wasn't feeling well so he slept. I put Jack in the sling and handed out candy in the driveway to kids who walked up. DH thinks I shouldn't do that this year and that kids like coming up to the door. Last year it was really warm and I was in shorts and even felt that Jack might have been a little warm next to me. This year it's going to be chilly but Jacks costume can easily have a jacket with it. I'm also pretty sure our dog is going to go crazy every time the door bell rings but I'm not sure putting him out in the back yard is going to help much much. DH never got to go trick or treating as a kid and I don't think he believes me when I say that it isn't about ringing the door bell, it's about the candy.FWIW, Jack will be with us outside "helping" for as long as he can handle it.

So what say you? Which is better?

  • When Leo was 1 we waited outside. We weren't going to take him door to door and thought that'd be a good way for him to get the Halloween experience. It was fun, no one seemed to think it was weird, and all the kids seemed mostly concerned with their candy :)

  • We sit on the front porch and hand it out.  Makes the dogs less crazy and they really dont care about ringing the bell. Infact, the kids in our hood sigh having to walk up our long driveway.  It is all about the candy!

  • If your dog is going to be barking up a storm, I know *I'd* prefer that you go ahead and stay out on the driveway if you're cool with that.

My girls were traumatized a couple years ago with some barking dogs at some houses, and then one yappy dog coming running out at another house.  Thereafter I got the fearful question: "are there going to be any dogs there??!?" and we didn't finish out the last houses.

  • We wait outside and let Kate hand out candy. My poor dog almost had a heart atrack the first Halloween we had her so we try to minimize the door bell ringing.

  • we're going to sit outside with a cooler of waters for the trick or treater's parents and just hand out candy.  our dog goes nuts with all the doorbell ringing and the lazy bum in me thinks its so annoying when the door rings right when i get back to the couch.  hahaha
  • We sit outside in a chair every year.  None of the kids seemed less excited than when they used to come to the door.  It's just better for us because our dogs go crazy each time the bell rings.

    This makes me sad.
