Food Allergy

Mango allergy?

We gave LO mango yesterday & she developed a terrible diaper rash (including a rash in the creases of her legs, which she has never happened before) & she woke up every hour screaming. She would only calm down if I laid her on my chest to sleep. The redness is gone today but she still has raised bumps on her privates.  1. I'm wondering if these are typical signs of a food allergy, 2. if she is allergic to mango, what other foods should I avoid and 3. if a child shows signs of a food allergy, how long should you wait before trying it again to see if they outgrew it? TIA!

Re: Mango allergy?

  • Have you already tried bananas? Mango is an allergenic fruit, but i dont know much about it. Bananas and Mangoes have some sort of common thing that people can be allergic to-something similar to rubber I think. I am allergic to bananas, but its more of an oral allergy, as my throat and inner ears itch really bad. I wouldnt try the mango again for quite a while, and contact an allergist, because more than likely the pedi will just dismiss it, from my experiences anyways...

  • Mango is on my avoid list thanks to my Oral Allergy Syndrome (which is so sad, because it is DELICIOUS). Usually my reactions are very oral in nature and only occur with consumption, but mango is one of the few things that I need to be careful about contact with. I can't remember the name, but there is something about mangoes that is in the same family as poison ivy and sumac. I react like you wouldn't believe to poison ivy - not pleasant.

Ditto PP - I would avoid mango until you have a chance to talk with an allergist about it. Have you tried banana with LO? Keep an eye on new fruits as you introduce them - hopefully mango will be a one-off. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice! We had already tried bananas & she didn't show a reaction to those, so hopefully the mango is just a fluke. After doing further research online I did read that mango is recommended to start after 8+ months; thanks a lot Plum baby food & your marketing your product to "4+ month babies.
