So much spit up! What to do!?

I'm a FTM and my LO is 3 weeks old, my LO is spitting up a lot more than usual over the last day. He eats every 3-4 hours for 10 min on each side, I'll burp him between sides but he doesn't always burp and I'll burp him again when we're finished.

I just finished feeding him 30 min ago and I always keep him upright for at least 10-15 min after finishing to let things settle.  He didn't burp after we finished and about 8 minutes later had a major spit up, I'd say it was close to .5 - 1oz of milk. Since then he's had a few little spit ups also but I think he's done now. He fell asleep almost immidiately so I'm thinking he just got too much milk and was full. But I can't help but worry it might be something else, he did the same thing earlier this morning but the quantity wasn't as much. He doesn't seem uncomfortable other than the occasional grunting that I've read is pretty normal at this age.

Should I be concerned or is he just getting too much milk?

TIA!!

This may not help...but my LO has just started the same thing at about 2.5 weeks.  I thought I wasn't going to have to deal with the spit-up because of those first couple of weeks without it...but no such luck.  I feel so bad for her when she does it, and it seems like so much!  I do the same thing with the burping and keeping upright, but it doesn't seem to help.  I feel sorry for her because it seems so sad (and sorry for myself for laundry purposes), but everything I've read / heard says its completely normal as long as they don't seem in pain or upset...So I'm looking forward to what others have to say!

  • I've been having the same concern. My LO is also 3 weeks, and he often spits up quite a bit and it freaks me out. I assumed that his belly just can't hold that much milk, so I've started feeding him from only one side at a time for now and the spitting up seems to have subsided a bit. He doesn't seem so hungry that he needs to go to the other side right away, but he might want to like an hour later, which can be a pain, but I think he needs to work his way up to nursing on both sides...stretching his stomach so it fits.

  • My DS2 was a major puker until he was 6-7 months. As in, we'd go through a gazillion burpcloths and outfits (for everyone) every day. It sucked a LOT, but he did grow out of it...he was always happy, slept on his back fine, but just spit up constantly. Some babies are just like that - my first son didn't spit up a lot at all. Hopefully they all grow out of it fast!!

  • My LO started this at almost 4 weeks old.  I was so worried about it I started searching everywhere online.  All I've read says spit up is more a laundry concern than a health issue.  WedMD had an article about it.  As long as baby doesn't seem upset (like something is hurting mouth, tummy, etc.) and is gaining weight spit up is just something that has to be dealt with.  The articles said it should peak between 4 and 6 months.  I tried what a PP said and started giving LO only one side thinking she was getting her stomach too full but then she acted hungry way too soon.  Now I just let her eat what she wants and will deal with the spit up later.

  • It could be reflux, allergies, a stomach issue, or oversupply, but most likely it's just age. I freaked out and did all sorts of stuff to help my baby, but she just outgrew it naturally at about 6 months. In retrospect I should have just been doing laundry.
