Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Explain the sippy cup...

So I was over a neighbors house this past week and there was a 7 month old and a 6.5 month old. My LO Is 6 months old.

The other two mom's were talking about the sippy cup - the 7 month old loves it, the 6.5 month old doesn't.

When are you suppose to introduce the sippy cup and why? I thought that would be something I would focus on at 1 years old when my baby was breastfed anymore. FTM here...can you give me insight on why and when we start using the sippy cup?

Oh and one mom said she just did water in the sippy cup not formula...so also, what should be put into it?

Re: Explain the sippy cup...

  • It's all about your LO's preference.  My friend's boys both took a bottle until they were close to a year old and she had to slowly introduce them to a sippy cup.  My DS hated his bottle and has been taking a sippy cup since he was 5 months old.  I breastfeed him, but in the car or when he's with DH, he drinks from his cup.

We put breastmilk or water in his cup.

  • So it's okay to give water now? How much water? And is the water just for purposes of practicing with the sippy cup?

Just put a little water in the cup - it's just for practice during solid meals. Like PP said, they'll bang it around and occasionally get in in their mouths. DS usually just holds his upside down and watches the water drip out.

  • It's really just practice at this point. I started introducing it at 6 months. They mostly just play with it, but that's fine. Sometimes I put formula in them and sometimes water.

My hopes are to ditch the bottle 100% at 1 yr old. I want them to be use to the sippy cup so it's not as much as a shock to them at that point and make the transition easier.

  • so do you give them the sippy cup while they are eating solids like on the high chair?

  • I started giving it to her at 4 or 5 months. She drinks water out of it. She is EBF and has never taken a bottle. She is just now getting good at it. She chews on it more than she drinks from it. I think she is teething.

  • We started giving her a sippy with water (or watered down juice if she needed it) with meals about a month ago.  Now she get's her two middle feedings in a sippy (the first and last still in a bottle) because she can feed herself for the most part.  She loves her sippy and sometimes will refuse her bottle.  I didn't plan on her using it this much this early, but she likes it so I figure why not.

  • Eh, I was going to wait until 9 or 10 months, once she's sitting up super well and is into table foods, even to introduce the cup...and not a sippy. Maybe one of those transitional ones that bring her to a regular cup in a few months. She likes her bottle for now, and I'm fine with that.

My pedi told me to give DD a sippy cup of water to play with during her solids feedings. She just bangs it around, tosses it, and then every once in a while gets it in her mouth. I hold it up and she sucks on it - sometimes gets a sip of water, generally doesn't.

He said it's just for practice, she won't have any idea what it's for right now. I don't think it's something to worry about at this age, or anything.

eta: I don't really worry about the amount, she doesn't get much if any.

    This.
