How soon after having LO can you get pregnant?

So my LO is just over 5 weeks and we have had sex a few times, how soon can you get pregnant? I took a pregnancy test and it was negative, but i am still concerned. I am not ready for #3 yet. How soon have some of you gotten pregnant? TIA.

  • Just a lurker, but...

Why were you having sex before 6 weeks pp (did your doc clear you before then)? Ouch!  And if you took a test already, does that mean you had sex only 3 weeks pp? Double ouch.

  • Your cycle can return pretty quickly after you have the baby. It's not abnormal to ovulate 4 weeks PP, then get a BFP when you go in for your 6 week PP checkup. If you had unprotected sex 3-5 weeks PP, you absolutely could have conceived.

If you're EBF, you're less likely to ovulate/have AF, but it's not impossible.

  • It is different for every woman.  If you do not want to get pregnant, use barrier methods or see your OB for the mini-pill/IUD.  You CAN get pregnant before you get your first PP period.  I did, but we were hoping for it.  I was EBF and ovulated when my DS was 9 months old.  Some women resume fertility at 2 months, while others can take over a year.  I know some women who BF and didn't get their period until almost 24 months PP.

The same rules apply as any other time.  If you are NOT ready, then use some sort of protection or abstain.  It is really that simple.

I am somewhat amazed that you have 2 kids and have already had sex a few times at 5 weeks PP.  That area was a no-go zone for me for awhile PP.  Haha.

I can't be the only one wondering why you're having unprotected sex if you don't want to get pregnant.

If you don't want to be pregnant do something to prevent pregnancy and you won't have to be concerned, right?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

My OB cleared me at 4 weeks BUT only if my bleeding had stopped [it hadn't].

To the OP..really? Use protection if you don't want a baby right now. It's not that hard.

You are NOT the only one.  Hence my comment about how simple it is to use protection if she doesn't want to get pregnant.  It really seems like 'common' sense to me.

  • As far as I know you can get pregnant immediately. I don't think childbirth stops ovulation. My son was 5 months old when we found out we were pregnant with my daughter, so 4 months pp when we conceived.  My daycare providers son and daughter-in-law have children exactly 1 year apart almost to the day, so obviously you can conceive quickly!

  • After I had my daughter, we wanted to try right away to get pg again.  I got my first PP period at almost exactly 4 week PP.  At my 6 week PP visit, I got the clearance to have sex.

I went home and took an OPK, which to my surprise was positive.  We had sex that very night and REALLY hoped it would result in a pregnancy.  It did not, but I was pregnant by the time my daughter was 4+ months old.

So, I totally could have conceived from the sex at 6 weeks PP, and would have gotten a positive hpt around when she was 8 weeks old.

+++but, to add my own disclaimer++

Don't want to get pregnant, either don't have sex, or have protected sex.

My doctor never had to clear me.  When he discharged me from the hospital he said that once I stopped bleeding and felt comfortable I could resume having sex.  For most women that actually happens around 4 weeks, so it's really not all that unusual to have sex before the 6 week appointment.  I had stopped bleeding by 3 weeks and we tried then, but I was still a little too sore at that point so we didn't do anything until about a week later.
