VBAC

Successful VBAC!

Just thought I'd take a moment to share/brag about my SIL. She had a successful VBAC yesterday. I'm so proud of her!

She had days of early labor. Intermittent contractions that made it impossible to get any real sleep for the past 3-4 days, but not consistent enough to be "real labor." Also, during the day she was chasing around her 20-month old. She was really reaching her wits end.

Thursday night around 8:30 pm her doula came out, just to tell her that she could do and try to comfort her, since she was exhausted from all the start-stop labor (and the doula admitted to was afraid she'd throw in the towel and just request a c-section to get it over with), well turned out she was really in labor! The doula helped her labor at home until she was begging to go to the hospital. They headed to the hospital at 4:30 am. Got there at 5 am. She was checked and she was at 7 cm!

She got the epi and basically waited to finish dilating. Around noon (sorry, I could really be screwing up the times because this is based on when she texted me). She got a little pitocin to help her finish dilating (she'd been stuck at 9 for a while).  Apparently, she even labored on hands and knees for a while (supported by the bed) after getting the epi.  She started pushing around 3:30 pm and after 2-hours of pushing (baby was posterior but turned on the way out) the baby was born at 5:41 pm, 6 pounds 13 oz, 20.5 inches.  She had a second degree tear, but she is blissfully happy and already says the recovery is better than with the c-section.

She said that she couldn't have done it without the doula (I used the same one for my son)

My son is almost 6 months old. After watching my SIL have her first child via c-section, due to "failure to progress" I did a ton of research to try and avoid that. If not for her experience I wouldn't have known anything about anything. I'm so proud of her for persisting and getting what she wanted. The birth of a baby is a miracle no matter how it happens, but it sure is nice to get the birth you've been planning for.

Good luck ladies!

  • Very cool.  Congrats to your SIL and I think it's very neat that her 1st experience helped make yours positive.  I think we all hope for that.

  • Great story!  I'm glad you were able to use her c-section as a motivator for you too!  I'm really hoping my story had some effect on people.

  • Thank you for posting this. I am surprised they gave her any pitocin. I am so hoping for a miracle VBAC, but I accept that I may still have a c-section. I am just in such limbo and waiting.
