Feeding Frequency Paranoia

My DD was born a month early and will be three months old on Tuesday. She is still eating very frequently! Maybe every two hours, rarely every three. At her two month appointment the nurse seemed shocked that she hasn't moved up to eating every 3-4 hours. I can't complain too much because she has (mostly) been sleeping through the night so this frequent nursing must be helping. But, now I feel like I'm over feeding her because she eats to often. She has already doubled her birth weight and has 8-10 wet diapers a day 2-4 poopy diapers a day. Does anyone else's baby eat this often at this age? Thanks!

Re: Feeding Frequency Paranoia

  • My first one did that for MONTHS.  She generally nursed for about 45 minutes every other hour until she was at least 4-5 mos old.  And, btw, that was around the clock- no sleeping through the night.  When we hit that 4-5mo stage, she'd sometimes go a little longer.  Sounds like yours is doing great- esp. w/the sleeping at night!  If she's hollering to be fed, then feed her- there is nothing wrong about what you're doing or what she needs.

  • Mine still eats every 2-3 hours. I think she's nursing more frequently during the day since she does sttn for 10 hours.

  • If your baby is sleeping through the night, for the love of God don't change anything.

You can't overfeed a baby at the breast. Babies just stop eating when they're not hungry. You're doing fine - don't mess it up because of a silly nurse's comment.

  • My LO eats that often as well!  Sometimes every hour!  I am enjoying while she's this young still.  :-)

  • She's eating more during the day to make up for STTN.  Ignore the nurse and don't worry about it.  It's really hard to overfeed a breastfed baby and nursing on demand is the best thing you can do for your LO and your supply.  DS actually ate every 2-3 hours for months and he wasn't anywhere near STTN at that age.  He was just growing really fast, doubled at two months and more than tripled at 6 months.

  • You can't overfeed a breastfeeding baby. Both my kids didn't really space out feedings until 3-4 months or later. My 12 month old still has days where he nurses more than six times in one day. Hang in there!

  • If she's hungry, feed her. It's very nearly impossible to overfeed a BF baby at the breast. DS ate every 2 hours until four months old. I wouldn't start worrying about her spacing things out until she's at least that old (adjusted).

This ALL of this.  You've got a sleeping baby who's thriving.  If it ain't broke...

  • My daughter is 11 months old and still nurses every two hours during the day. She can go longer, but she prefers not to. Stop watching the clock and just enjoy your baby!
