scalding milk ?

I am not back to work yet, but thawed one of my frozen bm packs yesterday and it smelled soapy.  i then tasted it it it tastes off.  I have read a little about excess lipase and am thinking this is the issue.

so..... how and when do you scald the bm?  right after pumping, after its in the fridge but before freezing?  does the milk go directly in the pan to scald or bottles in hot water?  how long do you scald it for and then when can it go in the fridge or freezer after?

thank you!

Well first, offer the soapy smelling bm to baby and see if they'll take it. often baby will without issue and then you don't really have to do anything.  It's not BAD milk, it's just that the lipase has started to pre-digest the fats in the milk and makes the milk taste off to us.  many babies take it without issue.

You should scald as soon after pumping as possible to inactivate the lipase so it can't start to pre-digest the fats in the milk.  you can put it directly into the pan and warm it up til it slightly begins to bubble, chill it fast and then freeze.

Unfortunately my LO won't take the frozen BM straight and I have to mix it 1:1 with fresh.   I didn't realize it was "soured" since I'm still home and we've been using fresh for all his bottles and just freezing the extra.  I took some frozen out a week ago to start using the oldest stuff up since it is ~3 mo old and realized it smelled off and then he wouldn't take it.  At least he'll take it mixed since I have ~300 oz frozen at this point.  I'm now scalding all of my milk and hope he'll take that without needing to mix.
