High-Risk Pregnancy

Fibroid tumors anyone?

I have one fibroid that I know of that is about 14 cm. I don't have health insurance right now so i have not gone in to see a specialist yet. We are trying to get on a plan. I am 14 weeks as of yesterday with my first baby. I am currently seeing a midwife that we love. I feel like there is no one that i know that has this problem. I am scared for the baby.I am spotting and sometimes more then that we don't know what its coming from, it could be the fibroid. I am not bleeding enough that I should worry says my midwife but she says we need to get me in to see a specialist. Is there anyone out there with fibroid tumors or has had them in pregnacys?

Re: Fibroid tumors anyone?

  • I have a fibroid that is currently measuring about 8x9cm at 16 weeks along.  I knew about it before this pregnancy, so it's been monitored from the very beginning.  I am considered somewhat high-risk, but I think that's more so due to my DH's diagnosis and not just the fibroid.

My Dr. has assured me that it shouldn't cause any serious complications with my pregnancy due to its location being far away from the baby and where the placenta is attached.  As my pregnancy progresses and the fibroid likely grows, it could end up blocking my cervix making it impossible to have a vaginal delivery.  I'd rather not have a c-section, but at the end of the day there are several reasons I could end up not delivering vaginally anyway.

I hope your pregnancy goes smoothly.  You aren't alone, and this isn't the first post I've seen regarding fibroids.

    Best of luck to you!

  • I would try like crazy to get into a specialist. Rarely do fibroids cause major issues, but they can certainly complicate situations. You'll want to find out what is causing the bleeding issues, and make certain that whoever providers your prenatal care has experience and access to any US equipment to monitor is needed.

Good luck - remember, fibroids are actually very common!

  • Ug. Fibroids.

I ended up in the ER for mine on Wednesday. (I never knew I had them or even what they were before then) I have over a dozen, but five of them are about the size of an orange or larger.

I told my ob/gyn about this intense, stabbing pain on my right side on Monday that has just started the night before (I was worried that it might be my appendix).  After feeling around on my stomach for only a few minutes, she told me that she believed that I had some fairly large fibroids and scheduled me for an abdominal ultrasound on Thursday. Unfortunately, I couldn't wait that long.  As of Tuesday afternoon, I couldn't even get out of a chair or use the restroom by myself without screaming or literally sobbing in pain. DH woke me up first thing Wednesday morning and insisted that we were going to the ER. After a battery of tests and sonograms (they ruled out appendix and gallbladder first), they determined that the large fibroids were not only the cause of my pain but also the cause of a bleeding episode I had experienced in week 9. (I am currently 17 weeks)

The good news is (in my case anyway), that they're more of a pain for me than anything else. We are lucky that our baby is healthy and strong and that its growth and development will not be affected by the fibroids at all. (Whew!) The doctors put me on some pain medications that would not affect the baby and told me to take it easy: the pain shouldn't last more than a few more days. (Although once one settles down, another could start acting up, but we're hopeful that they won't)

I was also informed that, because of the size and location of my fibroids, I have a higher chance of having to have a c-section, but nothing is certain at this point. There is also a chance that they may be able to remove one or more of the fibroids in the same surgery if a c-section is deemed necessary.
