is Charis a valid version of Caris or Carys?

In my mind I say no.  Looks like Chair to me and I think people will pronounce it hat way.

I am asking because my cousin just named his 6th child this.  I really dislike the spelling especially because his last name (mine too since I am hyphenated)  begins with CHE.  I envision everyone pronouncing them the same way.  Chare- is Che...when it should be kare-is Che....

  • It's a name on it's own, and it's supposed to be pronounced differently:

    CHARIS
    GENDER: Feminine
    OTHER SCRIPTS: ?a??? (Ancient Greek)
    PRONOUNCED: KAR-is (English) [key]
    Meaning & History
Derived from Greek ?a??? (charis) meaning "grace, kindness". It came into use as an English given name in the 17th century.

When in doubt, check behindthename.com, it's fairly accurate.
ETA: Caris is a diminutive of Charis, Carys is Welsh with another accepted spelling of Cerys

  • I pronounce them the same. Apparently it's my future niece's name. It's Greek for "grace". My sister thinks it's the best name evah. I think it's ok.
  • I like it and it's pronounced KER-is.  Pronouncing it with a ch sound is just wrong, IMO -- it's the same root as charismatic, from Greek for gift.
  • I know a woman named Charis.  I have known her for about three years so to me the name seems normal and I know how to pronounce it.  I do recall that when I first met her I guessed at how her name was pronounced.  (Co-worker, so I saw her name written before I met her.)

  • The only 2 people with this name that I know IRL both spell it Charis. I don't think the pronunciation is too out there compared to the spelling. The "Cha" beginning is often pronounced without the CH sound, like in the word "character".

This.  Not another form of Carys, just a similar name with a different origin.  I can see how it is likely to be mispronounced with the last name, but it's a perfectly legitimate name on its own, and it has a nice meaning, too.

  • I just don't get the appeal of any of those. I think of soap.
  • Yes, it is valid- It is Greek. I have NEVER heard of "Caris" or "Carys" - I have ONLY heard of Charis. I think Caris and (esp) Carys look completely made up!
