Hi everyone! I tried to CD with DD1 and it did not go well, but I'm not sure why. I seemed to do okay with PFs, but they wouldn't last overnight.
I had bought a number of pockets (dont' remember what kind) off of CL. They never were very absorbent and I ended up putting 2 inserts in each, but then her clothes didn't fit anymore bc of the bulk. Ugh..LOL!
With this, I realized that this particular child (who we have nicknamed Secretariat) pees more than any other kid I have ever seen. She used to soak her sposies at night and required daytime changes more often than most. In the cloth, she didn't even make it an hour. Further, the ammonia smell was killing me. ( I believe I used Tide powder and occasionally a vinegar rinse.)
So maybe the previous owner used the wrong soap and ruined them without knowing? I never did end up stripping bc at that point I was just so fed up with the whole thing.
Well, now Secretariat is potty trained and I'm considering trying again with my almost 2 year old and our soon to be newborn.
I've seen some new dipes out there (flip, anyone?) that I'm not familiar with.
So what works for you and honestly, which soap is best? I also don't want to spend tons on a stash (nor will hubby go for that, since the last time went awry.)
Thanks so much.
Re: ready to try CDing again..help a semi-newbie!
I tried with our first(who was 10 months at the time) i purchased all but one of my diapers used...and I think i got worked over. I couldnt keep them from stinking and had tons of problems. I quit. This time around, i tried new diapers and some used diapers to figure out what we liked, then we had a suedecloth allergy! So I decided it was best for use to go the fitted, prefolds, covers route, and we love it!! I have actually begun converting my pf to fitteds, they are much trimmer that way! I am also still leary of used diapers because I got burned with my first, so most the time I try to purchase new, or I try to get some that have only been used a few times before the mother decided they didnt work for them!
Now to anwser your questions.. I have some flips, love them(the only downside is that the front has some material on the top inside that does get wet with pee so they will begin to smell like pee after a couple of changes. But the fit is wonderful!! I also like the econobum covers. Although the cover feels thin, they are great covers, no leaks so far! I use all f&c, it gets the job done. I purchased all my prefolds from a mamma on DS that overpurchased for half price, still nip. I purchased my cover new from jack be natural, free shipping, and they give you instore credit!! It adds up! I have also purchased a few covers off swap spot and ds that were new, because the mamma changed her mind? Good luck this time!! It am sure that it will work!
I use Charlie's Soap, and it works great! RnG also worked well for us, but it was more expensive.
I really like the Flip system, and you can definitely diaper very affordably that way. They didn't work that well on DD for the first 3 months or so, but they haven't leaked since then. They're DH's favourite diapers to use.
You can also buy Kawaii pocket diapers from theluvyourbaby.com for a steal. You can get the OS snap diapers for $7 each with free shipping if you spend over $70. Their Goodnight Heavy Wetters diaper ($7.75 each) has never leaked for us overnight, even when DD has slept 14 hours straight. We mostly use BG diapers, but the Kawaiis have worked just as well.
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
I'd get used Bumgenius 3.0 or 4.0 pockets used off Spot's Corner (https://hyenacart.com/Spots_corner/) and use Tide original powder, 1.5 Tablespoons full.
I think a diaper trial would be a great option for you. Jillian's Drawer's has a very popular one. You get to try different types of diapers to see what you like.
For what it's worth, unless you double or triple your prefolds at night, they won't last overnight. And CDs are just bulkier than disposables, no what style you choose.
And I use regular Tide. I've tried Rockin' Green, Mountain Green, Planet, and making my own but Tide works the best for us.

I've only been CDing for a few months..It's been nothing but a hassle for me, but I'm determined to keep at it.
My stash consists of 3 Kawaii pocket diapers, 3 GroVias (with snap in inserts), 2 pocket Swaddlebees, 1 pocket Sunbaby, 2 Flip covers with the Stay Dry Inserts, 3 Swircles Fleece Fitteds, 1 Goodmama fitted, 1 Baa Baa Baby fitted, 4 pocket Alva baby, 1 Fuzzibuns pocket that I haven't used yet, 2 BG 3.0s that should arrive sometime next week, 1 Hugga buns pocket, plus about 8 prefolds that I just use for nighttime.
I like them all but the Swircles. I used to hate my GroVia because they would leak, but that was due to user error. I love my Flips too, very easy and convenient, but like a PP said, the material at the top does get wet easily and will smell. I just recently purchased the GM & BBB fitteds and I LOVE THEM. Best fit on my LO!
I use Tide Free and Gentle detergent. Right now we are in the process of trying to find out if DD has an allergy to the detergent or microfleece material of her pockets (she keeps a bad rash these days), so I feel like I'm ready to just sell them all.
