Babies: 6 - 9 Months

weird nighttime crying...

DS is almost 8 months old and he tends to sleep well, but about 5 nights a week he "wakes up" up at around 11pm crying and whining-he doesn't open his eyes and he just sounds so sad. We've let him be a few nights and he goes back to sleep but there are some nights where the only way I can get DS to go back to sleep is to have him fall asleep on me.  Last night he fell asleep on me, I put him back down, and he screamed his head off. My husband gave him some tylenol because he thought DS might be sick because this was so out of character. DS woke up immediately and was the happiest, cutest baby. We put him back in the crib and he played for a little bit, and went to sleep.  Has anyone else run into this? I initially thought it could be nightmares, or gas, but I can't pinpoint what it could be.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Re: weird nighttime crying...

  • DD does this sometimes, it it so upsetting.  I mentioned it to the pediatrician the other day, and she pretty much brushed me off ( I will not be seeing her again).

I don't think it is nightmares in DD's case, I did at first.  But she started this a while ago, and at that point she didn't even have stranger fear.

  • Hmm the only time my LO did that, teeth appeared a week or two later. So, it was a temporary thing for us. Maybe it will be the case for you? Or has this been happening a long time?

  • My daughter has been doing this for the past few nights. She does it several times a night though, almost every hour or two. She will cry or whine and roll over and go back to sleep most of the time. I don't know what it could be, doesn't seem to bother her, just less sleep for me. She has been more whiny during the day, not sure if it's the age or if she's getting more teeth or getting sick.

  • For us its usually teeth or gas. The worst is when they cry the minute you lay them down after getting them to calm down.
  • I agree with what PP said about teeth. My LO was generally a good sleeper until she learned to stand, and then more teeth started coming in. I hope it gets better for you very soon!

  • Teeth! DS did this same thing for about 2 weeks before he got his top teeth. I even took him to the doc thinking it could bean ear infection because the weird crying but nope, doc said teeth.
  • DD does this when she's constipated or has gas. It is this really sad, slow cry and her paci falls out of her mouth. It is so sad. It is like the kind of cry you would expect if she fell down and hurt herself, but it is in the middle of the night, while she's sleeping... so it is unsettling. She's done this a few times in the past few weeks, and every time she wakes up in the morning and has a really hard poop.

  • My son does that often, but I think we're dealing with night terrors. I've done some research and it seems to fit, but our pedi says "sometimes babies just do that." It could be a dream, it could be that they are uncomfotable (gas teething or otherwise..) but for us it's different. He doesn't wake up and if I can get him to wake up he's not himself. It's almost like he's sleepwalking (which runs in my family, unfortunately and is believed to be linked to night terrors in children) And if he fully snaps out of it, he's the happiest baby ever-- like you said. So I don't think it's gas or teething because if it hurt bad enough to cry in his sleep, it would still hurt when he woke up.

Whatever it is, it's surely the saddest thing ever. And I feel so helpless :(   The good thing is, from what i've found, babies don't have "nightmares" in the standard sense, which made me feel better because I can't imagine him knowing anything bad or scary!

  • My DD does this occasionally too... whines and cries sometimes at night... and sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night screaming and inconsolable.  Like people said, I think it's due to teething, constipation, and/or nightmares.  Generally I just pick her up and comfort her, rock her, and try to get her back down.  If that is unsuccessful, I'll give her a little bit of tylonel or a bottle depending on what she seems to need.  Usually by then she will fall back asleep. and when she wakes up for the day, she is all smiles and giggles... i think maybe its also just her being tired and cranky. Pedi agreed with how I am handling it, and didn't really have any other suggestions.  sorry you are going thru this too!
  • DS does this too. He is never actually awake!! I know usually it's teething, sometimes he is sick as well. I don't have a solution though, we just tolerate it : (
